Ode to America

By

If you have not heard about Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and his Romanian newspaper article, C'ntarea Americii, read on and be proud to be an American.

We rarely get a chance to see another country's editorial about the USA .

Read this excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title 'C'ntarea Americii, meaning 'Ode To America ') in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentulzilei 'The Daily Event' or 'News of the Day'

~An Ode to America ~
Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious

beliefs.

On 9/ll, the American tragedy
turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart.
Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers.
Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts.
Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about.
Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand.

0A
After the first moments of panic , they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every occasion, they started singing: 'God Bless
America !'

I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelc hair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy.
What on earth can unite the Americans in such way?
Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money?

I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace, I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion;
... Only freedom can work such miracles.
                                                                                                                                          Cornel Nistorescu

Bravo, Bill !!

I have observed that many times foreign nationals or our naturalized citizens who came to us from other countries understand our greatness and see the obvious strength of our nation where we who have always lived here may overlook it or forget where we saw it last.

Bill - that is a great message, however, it didn't take long for the unity to start unraveling.

American pride is something no outsider ould ever hope to fully come to grips with.  Being an American is a gift that many took for advantage until 9/11, but that specific occurance brought us All together.  The 20-somethings that had no great war to believe in were languishing until our test was presented to us.  The American is a patriotic animal, though many were hibrinating before the proverbial spring of 9-11 woke us all up.

As a Romanian who immigrated here many years ago, I agree wholeheartedly with Cornel's article.  Freedom does unite.

Don't forget that Religion is at the core of that freedom.  When allowed to our own devices we seem to gravitate towards the truth.  In Romania we had no bibles.  Religion was tolerated at best.  The American people are more religious than most other nations.  Imbibed in the spirit of God, we seem to be a kinder population.

...Just my observation.

It feels good to be able to openly read the bible and to be allowed the pursuit of whatever religion my spirit calls me to.

Some of our friends immigrated to other countries.  Unfortunately, they were not as easily assimilated as the friends who chose the USA as their new home.  We have a great deal of diversity here and an amazing acceptance of all nationalities.

Being an adopted daughter of this great nation of ours, I often times use the analogy of an adopted child.  While a child is bound by the inherent ties to his biological parent, it is the parent who adopts and raises such a child that enjoys the love and closeness with that child.  So it is with me:  while I love my mother country, Romania, my adoptive mother, the USA, is indeed the one I call MOTHER, the one I cherish, love and consider myself a part of.  If I ever have to pick sides, it will be an easy choice:  The United States of America IS my country!  It won me over by accepting me so readily and allowing me to be myself.  Freedom does unite!

Thank you for a great post!  Humans have a tendency to take good things for granted...
