Do You Like The AR Spell Checker?

At some point in the past the spell checker used by AR has changed. For some time it simply did not want to work, but then, after more mess than we usually have, it started working again. The first thing I noticed is that it started giving a much longer list of words. Very soon I figured that this adds frustration, and does not help at all. Some of the misspellings pull the list of 63 words, and they take the whole page, and to choose "Ignore word" you have to scroll down (and the drop down list does not disappear like it used to, when you start scrolling), and after clicking do back to the work window.

When you have such a long list, it does not help when the word is there, however the new spell checker started missing the right spelling for many words, that it had no problem identifying before.

Let us take the letter "x, and see how the spell checker handles the misspellings. Below are 15 words where the letter x is missing. I did not include the words like eternal, as the spell checker would not consider it a misspelling. So, here we are:

  • etra,               offers 11 words, but no right word, which is extra
  • eample,          15 words and no right word
  • eception,           6 words, no right one
  • taes,               53 words, and still no right word
  • proimity,          14 words, no right word
  • fa ,                 The spell checker does not recognize that there is anything wrong with fa
  • eceptional,         5 words, no right one
  • ecellent,          14 words, no right one
  • etraordinary,      3 words, and one of those is the right one
  • etravagant,       8 words, and one is the right
  • eterior,            25 and no right one
  • eercise,           70 words, no right one
  • eecute,           39 words, no right one
  • epensive         67 words, no right one
  • epanse           67 words, no right one

As you can see, out of 15 words, the spell checker failed in 13, making it simply useless. Imagine that on those 67 and 70 word long lists you have to scroll 3 times to get to the end (and still not finding the word.

Interestingly enough, the old spell checker was finding the right word for these 15 words with no problem, and it did not go longer than, I think, 5 words.

Do you notice similar problems with the spell checker sabotaging the very task it has?

We noticed a while back that the word blog is not listed as a word on the AR spell check, have you sent this data into the contact active rain area?

Jon,

It's better than nothing!

I look better when I write in WordPerfect. But when I past in to AR it often breaks-up.

Jon, I use a html program to do my posts.  It has it's own built in spell checker.  I haven't used AR's spell checker for quite some time.

Patty & Scott -  yes, and we joked about it before that the blogging site's spell checker did not recognize the word "blog". Usually there is an option to add it to the dictionary, I guess, nobody tried to do it.

Laura -  How come it is better if 1. It does not find the words in 13 cases out of 15;

2. You have to scroll a lot and it is very inconvenient.

Previousl spell checker may be was not the greatest one, but it was finding the words, all 15 out of 15 and it did not kick you back the whole Webster's Dictionary, and force you to scroll up and down.

I failed to see the "better" part. What exactly does it do better?

Bill - I would guess anything is better than nothing, if to look at it philosophically. But then this is the only good way to look at things, right?

Bob - I guess it is not because the AR spell checker is so great, that you choose to use something else. Just a guess...

Nope, I don't like it one little bit.  I wish they would change it back because it very often doesn't find or recognize the word.

Jesse -  At last I hear the voice of reason. Why do I need 70 word list, when it can't find the word I need to correct in the first place. I checked the same list in Microsoft Word. The longest list of words was 5, in 13 out of 15 cases, the right word was the first one, and in 10 or so of them there was only one word. They did not need to provide more, as it was so clear what was missing.

So, when Bill says that it is better than nothing, I would agree, but when I hear that it si better than what we had before, I do not think so.

Or, is it a subtle way to push us to type correctly 100% of the time?

Hi Jon, I have a suggestion for you that works very well for me. You can download iespell which is an add on for Internet Explorer and works so well. It will do spell check on amy open site on Internet Explorer. I use it for everything and is quite reliable.

I gave up on the ar spell checker a long time ago.
