Their annual rite of passage has begun! Just look at the banks of the Maumee River located at the southwestern part of Lake Erie and the City of Toledo, Ohio. If you're a fisherman, this is some of the most valuable real estate in the world when the walleye begin their journey to the spawning grounds of the Maumee River. For those of you that didn't know, the Maumee boasts the largest population of migrating walleye east of the Mississippi River.
The combination of rising spring run off waters, a river bottom of small rocks and gravel makes this an excellent spawning ground. Fishing begins in early March and continues through early May but according to Thomas LaVergne, education/information officer, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife "the exact start of the Walleye Run usually depends on the weather, once the ice melts".
If you love to fish, grab your waders and stop on through!! The hot spot is between the river banks of the towns of Maumee and Perrysburg Ohio just south several miles up the river from Toledo. At peak spawning times, as many as 6000 anglers crowd the spawning area which stretches between Orleans Park on the south to Side Cut Metropark on the north bank.
Before you come, you can get up to date information on river levels, what tackle to use, maps and much more at Maumee Tackle. It is a local bait and tackle shop with all the inside scoop! They even sponsor a weekly Walleye Contest.
FYI, the fish are biting!!
Thanks,
Rick Turner
