Thanks Kathleen. It was a true makeover, for sure.. It was a time-capsule. The only thing we really kept was the chair, and even that got re-upholstered in a buff suede. The "matching" ottoman was a garage sale find that got the same treatment as the chair.

Hi Michelle.  I just have to say, I spent quite a bit of time scrolling up and down and comparing photos in your before/after series... and what I have to say is OMG!  That's awesome.  The furniture placement... and the mock fireplace (!)... great job.  A super tranformation.

Thanks so much, Tosha, Mel, and Betty!

It is one of our finer moments, to be sure. Every inch was touched in some way, because it had to be. Painting the paneling, but leaving the shag carpet and trim, would have been criminal. Also, the wall that faced the bed needed more than a piece of art. We needed something for the buyers to really enjoy looking at. The mock-fireplace isn't something we always go for... but sometimes, you just have to do what the space requires.

Plus, a dedicated area for romance is really vital in a master bedroom. This room obviously needed some sex appeal! We just couldn't leave buyers imaging themselves laying in bed and staring at closet doors while they cuddle.

Our carpenter's eyes got so wide when we showed him a picture of the fireplace we wanted him to duplicate from a magazine. He thought we went off the deep end! But then we told him, "No, Paul....A LOT smaller, not so ornate, and only deep enough for candles!"

LOL.

We think he did a marvelous job. Thanks so much for your compliments. I will pass them on to Paul.

Thanks Virginia,

Sometimes it is a challenge, but when it is warranted to expedite a sale, that is what you gotta do, or at least advise to do.

It can be a real shocker when you haven't upgraded a single element since 1976 and every inch is dated!  Mind you, this house was very clean. Sparkling, even. It was a time warp because NOTHING was damaged or worn out. These folks lived gently. It was a hard sell for the rennovations we recommended, because technically, there wasn't anything wrong with the surfaces. But once the paneling got a taste of paint, it was all downhill regarding seller resistance.

Thanks Vickie,

Benjamin Moore Aura Paint... Matte Finish,...direct over paneling, color HC-29 Putnam Ivory. Using paint woith no sheen in it whatsoever minimizes the appearance of any grooves or imperfections.

BM Aura self-primes, so it is great for paneling. Just don't use regualr flat paint...it isn't washable. Aura is scrubbable.

Michelle, that is great info.  I am bookmarking so I can make a folder later with such goodies in it.  I have painted paneling in my own house but it was VERY dark and took lots of coats to cover when I did it years and years ago.  Thanks again.
