Woman Kills Self for Foreclosure

A 53-year old Massachussetts wife and mother used her husband's high-powered rifle to kill herself on Tuesday, just hours before the house she and her husband owned was slated to be auctioned off.

The mortgage company alerted the authorities after they received a fax from Carlene Balderrama stating, "By the time you foreclose on my house, I'll be dead."

This is not good.  I see from the article that she had been shielding the mortgage information from her husband by shredding the notices.  The foreclosure is not good.  The suicide is not good.  Better communication between spouses might have led to a better outcome.

Evelyn & Ken: I agree...I'm sure that there were other contributing factors to this woman's state of mind at the time she committed suicide--it wasn't JUST the foreclosure.  Nevertheless, this story casts a poignant spotlight on the troubles a lot of folks are having these days.

The stress is too much for some to handle we get so attached to the things and forget it's about the people we love. It is such a sad story.

Terry:  Beautifully put...I'm sure this woman's family would have opted to live under a bridge if it meant having their wife/mother with them today.

The emotions that surround a foreclosure run deep.

I wonder if the banks will pay attention to the public's cry for help.

Dawn: Yes...a foreclosure can turn a family's life upside-down. I do think that our government, if not the banks, are hearing cries for help and are trying to assist the American family.  (If they can just stop partisan bickering long enough to forward legislation!)

Kim, I think this is going to become more common too. There was an article on AOL about a foreclosed couple who committed suicide (carbon monoxide in the garage). So many people don't think they have an out. Very sad.

Yes, it's unspeakably sad.

Very, very sad. I read the brief article and cannot imagine how her shocked husband and son must be feeling. I am with Debbie and worry that, unfortunately, we may hear more of this type of thing. Reminds me of people jumping out of office building windows after loosing everything during the Great Depression. They obviously hadn't actually lost everything, just seemed like it at the time. Much too sad.

Kim:  How horrible.  Everyone lost in this situation.  It's so sad that the woman felt she had no one to talk to.  Our politicians need to understand that many hard working Americans are hurting very badly.

Hi Kim,

Oh wow!  Never heard of anyone committing suicide due to foreclosure.  So sad! Our new housing bill will help a lot of people.

Donna & Catherine: There is a lot of pain today related to the housing crisis. As human beings, we have such a strong attachment to "home," that the thought of losing it can be devastating.

I do hope the housing bill serves its intended purpose and helps folks get out from under crushing house issues.
