CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE NAME OF THIS FURRY CREATURE?

Can anyone tell me the name of this furry creature?

As me and my friend were hiking in Cedar Breaks Utah last year taking in the beauty, we came across this furry creature sunbathing on the rocks, about the size of a small cat.

We were not sure what it was when we first saw  the furry creature, it looked like a badger at first glance. There was a couple standing there looking at it also and we asked, "it that a badger"? They replied no, "That is a ____________". I cannot remember what they called it, but it was a very strange name.

This furry creature was lying on the rocks right on the ledge of this cliff that dropped thousands of feet. If something was to startle this furry creature, it may have fallen to it's death.

I have left you with two photos. One photo shows you a close up of the furryfurry creaturefurry creature creature and the other shows the background and a little idea of where he/ she was lying.

Who ever knows the name of this furry creature, thank you because I am tired of calling he/ she a furry creature!

Could it be a badger of some kind?  It's got nails like a dog, it looks like.

If  I am not mistaken, the name Marmot rings a bell. I am 99.9% sure that the people watching with us mentioned the name Marmot. Thank you for helping me!

And Bob, leave the furry creature alone please. This Marmot might be a protected animal in Utah!

 Sasha,

It is a Marmot and I think they are related to the badger family.
