How Underwriting Laboratories (UL) has helped reduce dryer vent problems and dryer vent fire risks:
UL has worked with the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and the CPSC to reduce the number of clothes dryer vent fires.
Changes have been made to UL´s Standard for electric clothes dryers including:
- installation instructions, specifying using only metal exhaust duct materials;
- user instructions that lint be cleaned regularly from areas around the dryer and lint screen;
- routing wiring and keeping other electrical components away from heat-producing devices; and
- abnormal operations tests that simulate a blocked lint screen and exhaust at 25, 75 and 100 percent blockage.
Dryer Vent Wizard - Dry Clothes - Safe Homes, adheres to all of the UL recommendations.
About Vent Tubing Installation: Proper installation of the correct material that is up to today's City codes and manufacturing recommendations is also critical to fire safety.
Length and Type
Maximum Dryer Vent Lengths
The maximum length a dryer vent can be before problems arise, or are noticed, varies greatly between brands and models. The vent material and the type of outside vent cover being used also contribute to the maximum vent length allowed.
New Materials of Dryer Vents
In all cases, the longest possible working vent should be made of rigid metal vent material with a large mouth or louvered outdoor hood. Flexible metal ducting, although a bit easier to work with, causes reduced air flow due to its corrugated design and will contribute to a lint buildup in the ducting over time.
No Nylon Ducting for Dryers
Flexible Nylon ducting is no longer approved in most areas for dryer venting due to the possibility of a fire hazard and has never been approved for use on gas dryers.
