Initial Blog Post - Organizing for ADD clients

By
Home Builder with The Closet Factory, Goodlettsville, TN

I was invited to join this network by a very dear friend who has been a Realtor for many years.  She has seen value in helping her clients work with professional organizers before selling their homes. She has also seen value in helping her clients work with professional closet designers to optimize space after purchasing a home.

It seems that I have been dealing more with clients who have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). They have an inability to sort information and possessions. They are usually extremely bright and have many interests. It is fascinating to learn how each client thinks, and to help design a process that uses his or her normal habits that enables an 'automatic' sorting once the system is created.  This process is not created overnight, but comes after much interaction with the client.

Unfortunately for Realtors, it is usually a difficult task to get these clients focused on clearing out items so their homes will be more marketable. Some clients will respond to the pressure by throwing everything out, then regretting it later. Some clients will not be able to let go of anything.

Most organizers work to find an approach that will give clients peace of mind and allow them to enjoy their homes. Everyone wants their homes to be havens in which they can relax and recharge.

For many clients, potential homes are perfect except for the storage space. If a home falls into that 'storage challenged' situation, by calling a closet designer a Realtor can show the client there is enough space available. It can help the Realtor close the sale.

What happened to the good ole days of just selling the house!  I feel sometimes that I need to learn out to do cartwheels.
