Sellers: Exterior Spruce-Up Can Set Your Home Apart from the Rest! (Translation: Sell It!)

Start by getting in your car, and driving out to the intersection nearest to your home. Drive slowly, and pay attention to the yards of the nearby homes, and the overall look of the homes themselves.

Which nice homes catch your eye? Now take a look at the homes nearest to yours as you come closer. How does your home compare?

Make sure that your driveway is clean, & neatly edged. If it isn't paved, use some washed gravel or crushed stone to give it a defined border if you can.

How do your garage doors look? Do what you can to make them look their best. The minimum is cleaning them. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders.

If you have sidewalks, stepping stones, etc. leading up to the home, make sure that no weeds are shooting up through the cracks, and that everything is neatly trimmed.

Rake & mow the yard. Keep it watered & GREEN! Trim the bushes - especially those hugging the house.

Scrub the deck & give it a fresh coat of stain or waterproofing. Make sure there is no algae or mildew growing on the deck or siding of the home.

If your home has rain gutters, make sure they look good too.  No dents, cracks or disjointed sections.

Maybe most important of all, make sure the entry doors to the home are spotless, look great, and that the door framing & steps up to the door look great as well. Clean is the minimum, fresh paint is better.

Take a good look at your roof too. If it looks bad because it is stained, you may be able to have it remedied by a professional cleaning. If some shingles are missing, curling on the edges, or lifting up, you will not have many showings. Possibly you will have no buyers at all.

You may want to seriously consider re-roofing, because you probably will pay less to re-roof, than the amount buyers will want to discount your home price for an obviously deteriorating roof!

When you think it's all spruced up, an easy way to gain a fresh perspective is to take some photos of the exterior.  Begin taking photos at the street - where buyers will be driving past. Are they seeing the picture that you would like them to?

If not, you've still got more work to do if you want to sell! You truly need to have your home looking like the best pick in your price range in order for it to sell in today‘s market!
