Well I held an open house today at a beautiful home in Chester. I was pretty excited about it. I know, I know, rarely do visitors of an open house actually buy that house. Even so, I was still excited. As I said, this home is truly beautiful and decorated so tastefully by the young owners.
Now I've been an agent for less than a year. During this time, my biggest repeat "realtor" job has been doing open houses for other agents. I've done enough now that I feel I'm actually getting good at them. I know the drill--advertise--get the word out, make colorful, informative flyers, know the area, etc. After this, it's out of my control whether folks show up or not. I can only hope for a good turn out so I can at least tell the owners we did have some traffic and hopefully they can keep their spirits up.
I was a bit nervous this morning about the day ahead. I don't know why, just was. After reading my horoscope that pops up on my screen each morning (I realize some person dreams up stuff to say about each zodiac sign and hits send) I felt better. My horoscope stated that if I got up and out early today, I would have a good day. Well, I was at Starbuck's before 8:30 and had my balloons and signs in place before 9. The sun was shining and it was already getting a bit sticky and hot outside. I felt just maybe, it really was going to be a good day!!
I arrived at my open house, chatted with the owners, saw them off, and set up my display for all the visitors I was hoping would be coming through the door. The showing started at 1. By 2 with no visitors the sun was gone. In its place was some seriously dark clouds followed soon by strong winds, thunder and of course lightning. By 3 there was a break in the storm. I thought ok now maybe the visitors will make a mad dash to see this house before 4:00 when the open house ends. No sooner than I had that thought, I heard a strange sound outside. I went to one of the large windows and couldn't believe it. HAIL! Not small little drops but huge quarter size hail pellets coming down fast and hard. Before long the mulched flower beds were icey white. The deck was covered in what at first look seemed to be moth balls. This went on for a few minutes. I watched the pellets fall along with my signs out front as the wind took them down and across the street.
Finally, by just before 4 the hail was gone, I got my signs back in the right yard and a light rain was all that remained.
Oh and after all this exciting weather, two separate parties did come by. A woman looking at the house due to relocating and a nice man who called and asked if I could wait til 4:30 for him. He'd gotten stuck in the weather and was running late. Who'd have guessed? I waited.
I may not have gotten a sale today ( I thought that's what would make it a good day) but I did meet some very nice people today. I enjoyed talking with each of them. I also enjoyed the home I was showing. Even Mother Nature and her fun with the weather turned out to be really interesting. Hopefully, the man I waited for will remember that I did wait so he didn't make a trip for nothing and let me help him find a home for he and his wife.
At the end of it all I got to come home to my crew. A great guy, one of my beautiful daughters, and the sweetest white fluff ball with big black eyes that are only for me. I did have a good day! Hope your day was good too!
