Who do you surround yourself with ?

By

I am a big believer that positive energy and positive thoughts breeds positve outcomes.  I remember reading a sales book when I was a stockbroker (read many of them) where the secret was "You become what you think about"

As part of that, it is critical to surround yourself with successful people who share the same mindset and are positive.  Do you ever notice in any office the group of people that are complaining about the market, the buyers, the sellers, and everything else ?  Typically this group of people will not be your top producers and they will exist in any office in every profession. This gets back to the 80 / 20 rule where 20 percent of the salespeople will do 80 percent of the business.

Thus, it is important to surround yourself only with the 20 percent !  That positive energy and success momentum is contagious !  When I first started as a realtor about 5 years ago, I quickly realized who the top producers were.  When I had a question, I only went to them.  I was also cognizant of their time and did not go too much.  It was extremely benefecial to me to improve my skills right off the bat.  A good example would be if you are trying to improve your tennis game or golf game, it is always better to practice and play with people that are better than you are.  That is how you improve !  Do you ever notice that your performance goes down when it is the opposite ?

So moving foward into the fall and next year, think about the relationships (work, friends) that you want to associate with.   It is a good opportunity to raise the paradigm level and challenge ourselves to strive to the next level.

For today and tomorrow, I choose to associate myself with positive people and at work to surround myself with the top producers and make myself available to my team and other realtors with positve energy that are climbing the ladder.

Who do you surround yourself with ?

This is great!  I was in a seminar the other day and exactly what you have said above - is a lot of what was covered.

I like the comment about the group huddled in the corner.  Reminds me so much of an office I used to run.  You could always count on the same ole group to huddle up when change - yes that horrible word CHANGE - was implemented, market conditions detriorated and/or production was off.  The thing I could always count on too though - my perfomers were always using that time to take extra calls, or at least stayed clear of the gossip.  Very rarely did my leaders get involved in the circles of doom/gloom!

When we surround ourselves w/ positive people we are so much better off.  We are programmed so that we mimic the behaviors to an exent of those around us.  Success starts w/ our thoughts and beliefs - if we have people telling us we can - then we can.  If we have nothing but negative karma around us - pretty soon we don't even want to get out of bed!

Thanks for the post on mine earlier - and I agree - AR is full of positive news.

Ken,

I must admit, I have reread my post a few times since I wrote it as a positive reminder to myself !!!

It is funny about the "doom-and-gloomers" in every office... or just "the compainers" .

Everyday day, I am reinforced with the notion that positive thoughts breed positive actions that breed positve results.  Further, the people that we surround ourselves with will influence us so it is critical to choose those people wisely !

Debbie,

The greatest secret from Earl Nightingale "You become what you think about" was life changing for me.  I may need to go on to amazon or somewhere and find that tape again... it really is true.

Everything begins with our thoughts.  Postive thoughts can change the world !  They turn into action.

Great point... for sure, surrounding yourself with positive go getters changes your perspective.  I look at the friends and colleges I have... they are top producers in their fields, several are Realtors, and they are at the top, some are just very successful business people.  I do find myself getting great energy from them and I hope it is the same for them being around me.

Christopher and Stephanie :

Your so right. I learn to play guitar when I was young by ear mainly and by playing with older better then I guitar players. When I played with them I progress rapidly.

When I pushed my real estate career, I always look where are wanted to be. I would drive though the high end towns for residential real estate and view myself there. I always watch the top people and wallah. In commercial I looked at all the jobs and spoke to the people who were the players as often as i could. Even 30 seconds would charge me up.

You know the 80/20 rule applies in layers. First, all the particpants and then the divides again into 80/20 of the 20% group.

That defines your next target aways. This subject could go on and on. Maybe we could visit again.

I found now that I grew big in my pond is that to stay sharp I help others to rise. It pulls it all back out again and you don't get jaded.

Best always,

Richard

I have always heard that you will attract who you are.  If that means you are attracting the negative crowd, make some simple adjustments and keep going.

Kim - great point.  I think it is really important to surround oneself with like-minded indiviudals.  The people we surround ourselves with will to a certain extent, define who we are and the goals that people share will be accomplished.  Being able to learn from a referral and friend network and vice-versa is a very powerful opportunity - it shows the importance of not just networking but being involved in other people's lives and those people involved in our lives.

Richard - yes it always goes on and on.  There is always someone doing more business or accomplishing new goals and milestones we can aspire to.  We are the top producer agent in our office by far and wish there were some more top producers.  But we have networked outside of our office and that has helped - there are a number of other local agents that we can look to network with and to continue to aspire and grow.  There is always a higher pinnacle to achieve if one wants to achieve it !

Latonia - Most definitely - if someone finds that they are hanging out with all the complainers and blamers than they need to break out of that crowd per se.  It can be difficult but once it is done, it is easy.  And exciting too... However, those same folks will try to pull that person back into misery though !!!  That is when jealousy takes over... it is what it is.

This is so true.  I can be guilty myself.  My wife is always keeping me positive.  I don't hang at the office too much I don't really see the advantage.  I work at home 90% if the time, but do make sure I go to the meetings, tours and events!

Thanks guys for going back to this one.  I think this is a good reminder for all of us no matter what industry we are in.  Or maybe we are practicing for a sport and just trying to get better at something.  Practice makes perfect and who we surround ourselves with will make a big difference on that journey in improving our skills and in our profession.

'Your beliefs are your reality' Create success easily by working smarter not harder. If you want a successful reality, then install successful beliefs. Negativity breeds negativity so be the change you want to see in the world. Excellent post! Thanks for the sunshine on this Sunday.

Holding a Texas license means you paessd the tests for Texas real estate law and practices. Now you gotta take that California test! Better bone up beforehand. Real estate law varies by state.
