The most recent news about pets and the economy ... pets lose again.  Homeowners feeling the effects of recession, even if they aren't in foreclosure, are giving up dogs that they can no longer afford to feed.

There are many rescue groups trying to find homes for deserted pets.  Here are a few contact links for groups in Louisiana.

CAAWS  http://www.caaws.org    Ace, yep, that's me, the, highest card possible in the deck. Unless of course you are playing Go Fish. But who likes to fish? Oh yeah, labs love the water, and I am no exception. I'm trying out for the swim team this coming summer.

It's not a game, it's your life.

Sallie - This is nice of you to take the time to put this out there.  I read a post yesterday about the flood of animals heading to shelters.  Pet rescue is a better option from what I've heard.

Mark, adoption is the most humane way to deal with our overpopulation of pets.  My "pack" is currently four dogs and one feral cat.  My neighbors currently have 5 rescued ridgebacks in their home.  If everyone made the many aspects of the rescue effort a priority, it would be a great help.

I have to tell you my mother just had to put her dog to sleep after a beautiful llife of almost 15 years.  I told her she needed another dog.  She lives alone; my father passed away several years ago and companionship is ever so important.  the love an animal can give you and the joy is amazing.  we rescued a dog... we did not buy a dog.  We gave a life and home and a beautiful opportunity to a very loving and sweet dog.  my mother lives in white plains ny and we rescued a dog from north shore animal shelter.... do youe self a favor... give a pet  a second chance at life....rescue an animal!

I'm so glad that your mother gave this dog a chance to share her home.  They will have a lot of good times together.

I've been volunteering for the past 15 years for a non-profit no kill shelter here in Oregon and this year they have seen a doubling of animals being left their because of the economy. It really is sad for these pets that did nothing wrong but be alive.

Todd, pet owners need to find out how much pets cost before they make a committment to an animal.  As our health care costs go up, veterinary expenses are going up too, a lot.  And so is the cost of their food.  It really is an unfortunate situation for the pets.
