Kids and Dogs...Lessons to be Learned

By

Kids and Dogs...yes, I am a smoothie when it comes to kids and dogs. Now, don't get me wrong... I am not your run of the mill baby kisser. I do keep a safe distance, hahaha.

But, I do tend to surround myself with children mostly on athletic fields as a coach or as a volunteer for school or town events. I love to have them at my home, too, surrounding myself with my own children's friends. First, it does help to have your children within your reach ( especially the older they get!) and it is great to get to know your children's friends. My children never cease to amaze me and it truly is a wonder to watch them grow,  interact, select, make decisions and have empathy with and support their friends.

I tend to take in stray pets, too. Like my mom and my grandmother before her.

We have a very old Shar-Pei and he is quite the handful. I can write a whole blog on the breed and on Mr. B's shining personality. We have a rescue doberman/belgian malinois mix. She has a long story, too, But we are just happy to have her. Recently we lost our beloved, yet cranky cockatiel ( after 24 years). And, I am sure people are thinking...it was just a bird --- but, Nikki was not just a bird. He was with us soooo long.

The moral of this blog...is to surround yourself with those you love. I don't mean a free for all...or a 24/7 party ... but...take time each day to "Be HERE Now" and enjoy. Before you know it....things change and the kids and the pets have grown!

One nice thing to do...with your children, particularly if you cannot adopt or rescue a pet is collect items for local Animal Shelters. It is great to get you kids involved because they made to do this for a community service project at school or at church. One in our area, RBARI, 2 Shelter Lane, Oakland has a variety of needs. You can email volunteer@rbari.org . RBARI is a no kill shelter that needs pet toys and other items as well. For more information go to www.rbari.org .

Children, Pets and Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience.

I was just reflecting on how long it takes a pup to mature and finally 'settle down,' when suddenly they are old and feeble...then gone.  One grieves and thinks 'why do I keep putting myself through this?'  Then a flood of happy memories reminds us of the good times and how worthwhile pet ownership is :)
