The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance's vision is that the Greenbelt be a beneficial, valuable and permanent feature of Ontario's landscape. The Alliance considers itself a watchdog organization that works to protect the richest environmental areas of the Greenbelt from development pressures, to provide a Greenbelt-wide information network and exchange, to foster a sense of value and pride of place in the Greenbelt, and to increase the size of protected area within the Greenbelt.
The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance is especially concerned about poorly-planned urban development that results in disappearing forests and farmland, loss of wildlife and habitats, contamination of water, and growing pollution. They urge other Ontarians to stand firm to protect our Greenbelt from inappropriate development by encouraging resistance to proposals that will damage the countryside.
Ontario's Greenbelt extends 325 km from Rice Lake in the East to Niagara in the West and Tobermory in the North, includes almost 1.2 million acres of farmland, cleans the air and filters the water of Southern Ontario, and protects the habitat of 66 endangered species. It makes its adjacent cities better places to live, provides local food, and gives city dwellers somewhere to enjoy the countryside.
