Banning: The Downtown Art District

The Art District of Downtown Banning has been developing for several years now.  It started with several different Groups including Pass Cultural Arts Foundation , Poetry Groups, Dance, Photography and a Summer Music Series in the Park .

A couple years ago I was on the General Plan Committee that met once every week for almost a year to redo the Cities General Plan.  We talked about having an official Art District at that time, and a certain area was discussed. Another Art Group formed and this Group petitioned the City Council for funds saying they would bring business into the Downtown area helping to revitalize it.

Downtown Art District Street Faire

This is important because this Group has had a couple successful Street Fairs centered around Art, and they also were instrumental in convincing the City Council within the past few months to purchase Paula Hills building on N. San Gorgonio Ave, in the Center of the Downtown  Art District.

This two story building has been used as an Artists Co-op over the past several years, and now the city purchased it.

Watch for more news on the Art District and interviews with local Artists.

Sally- I love swap meets, and some of the Vendors at the Street Fair are sort of like being at the Swap Meet, but some of them demonstrate Art.  They have a Blacksmith (Klaus)  with his own wagon putting on displays, and potters (Paul) that let the kids make things.  A lot of Paintings are on display, and the last one had some African Art in the newest Art Gallery.  It's a fun activity no matter what we call it :)

Hi Kathy,

Are these held on a regular basis in Banning? I get through there every now and then so I'm curious. The P.S. event on Thursdays is great, one of the best I've ever experienced.

Lynda- The Art Group started these Street Fairs and they're held around Easter.  The Chamber had a weekly one with a car show, but at this point I haven't heard of when it will be repeated.  I absolutely agree the Palm Springs one is great, and so is the Redlands one.....:)  Banning is in it's infancy with the Street Fair.  BTW have you ever gone to the Carlsbad one...now that is something fantastic :)

Hi Kathy, Thank You for displaying the creative part of the city.  We drove quite often through Banning, Beaumont on out to Palm Springs when we live in that area.

Hi Dan- When was the last time you were out here...it's unbelievable what has happened, and is happening to this area.  In a few years I'm not sure I'll recognize it :)

Wow. It is most certainly a different Banning than I remember from 20 years ago!  I'll have to take a look the next time I am in Palm Desert or Newport Beach, CA

Pam- I moved here originally in the 70's.  I enjoyed the shops downtown, especially Felts Jewelry Store and Constantino's Candy Shop.  It was a cute little downtown, and we had a big Grocery Store up on 4th....Alpha Beta I think.  But the 80's on wasn't so good for Banning.

Fast foreward...they are doing a Downtown Revitalization Project.....and where the old Dairy Queen used to be on 8th finally, after all these years, has a new structure there......Rite Aid is almost complete.  Buds Department Store is the same...it's caught in a time warp, but most everything else has been changed, or is changing.

Hi Kathy, We left that area in October of 1994.  We visited the Riverside are where my brother-in-law lives in 2006, but did not get out east past there.  I imagine everything is growing rapidly!

Hi Kathy ~ I've been to the taste of the town in Carlsbad, they had great food, entertainment and a chalk festival. Not sure if that's the one you meant?
