Every sport has its ‘timed periods'. Football has quarters.....baseball has innings.... Polo is no different. - it has 'timed periods', too - and they are called: Chukkers. (sounds like plucker...but with a ‘ch' )
Here's the deal:
A polo match lasts about an hour and a half - and is played in 6 chukkers.
Each chukker is 7 minutes long. (a bell rings to indicate 30 seconds left - - -and then a horn sounds to end the chukker.)
There is a 3 minute break between chukkers. If you watch the players during the break you will see they are just like any other athlete.
Off come the helmets - sweaty brows get wiped - down goes the water/Gatorade - equipment is checked over - strategy discussed - a new horse is mounted...and off they go!
Ok, so not all other athletes mount a horse - - - but they do replace the baseballs / tennis balls / footballs as needed during the match! I guess, in a sense - the polo pony is like a piece of equipment. (the most important piece)
