Summerville,  SC                                                                                                                                   A little of the Present.  A little of the Past.

Summerville, SC is growing at an amazing pace.  New Census Bureau estimates show that Summerville has grown by 59 percent in the past seven years.  It is among the ten fastest growing towns in South Carolina since the 2000 Census.  Its population was estimated at 44,037 for 2007.  Some of the reasons for this growth is the climate, good quality of life, medical facilities and the Dorchester County School District.  It's proximity to the airport, historic Charleston, the beaches and shopping place it in a wonderful location.  The town also has an overall great reputation.

Summerville, SC began in the early 1800's as a summer refuge for the planters of the Stono Region.  Philosopher-Scientists among them speculated that there was something about the pine trees in Summerville that prevented malaria and promoted good health.  In the years before the Civil War, yellow fever in Charleston changed Summerville's history.  The settlement of several hundred people gave it the reputation of being a place where new cases of yellow fever never developed.  Worried Charlestonians really began to appreciate Summerville as their bedroom community.

The town expanded with a second migration of families of urban professionals.  During the siege of Charleston, the military hospitals were emptied in the warm months and the patients were transferred by rail to the large hospitals in Summerville.

In 1888, the Charleston News and Courier announced that Summerville was one of the healthiest places on the planet.

Summerville, SC continues to be a wonderful place to live.
