Back in the early ‘60s, the Robbins brothers (of Tweetsie RailRoad fame) of Blowing Rock, NC had a vision for Beech Mountain, one of NC's highest mountains. Located only ten miles or so(as the crow flies) west of "Blowing Rock"! They dreamed of a year 'round resort to attract "kids" of ALL ages; hence, Beech Mountain Resort began. There would be a SKI Resort for winter fun, along with a private, members only, Alpen Haus Lodge; summer attractions would be a 1st Class Golf & Country Club, a Tennis Complex; Spa & Pool facilities, a Day Camp for Kids and an Equestrian Center, along with platted homesites. Also, at the very TOP of Beech would be located the theme park - The Land Of OZ.
Shortly after getting started, the Robbins' Dream was sold to Carolina Caribbean Development Corp, who followed through on approx 90% of the project! It rapidly became the Gem of the NC mountains for many years - until CCDCorp went bellyup in the early ‘80s and Beech struggled to survive.......especially during the "gas shortages & high interest rates era". It wasn't until the mid nineties that Beech begin to re-emerge and since the early 2000s, it's been growing like crazy! Property values have enjoyed a steady increase in values ranging from 8-15%/year - still strong even in today's market! One big factor is our gorgeous Country Club - and the fact that each of the platted homesites was awarded automatic, free membership at the time of the "break-up" [the only stipulation being each had to pay a nominal annual membership dues.] Today, this value-added feature makes Beech an exceptional BARGAIN......... for surrounding Golf Club memberships' initiation fees begin at $95,000 (except for Hound Ears at $60K)!
