Snail mail woes. Yes, we were that stupid!

By
Real Estate Agent with Rector Hayden, Lexington, Ky

My wife Kathy is an excellent writer and she enjoys buying nice stationary and mailing notes to family and friends.  This morning she spent a  couple of  hours writing notes to a friend dying of cancer,  a note to our youngest daughter and notes to great grandmothers with pictures of our beautiful grandson.

Since we can see the mailbox from our home and we were going to be home all day she mailed the cards using our mailbox and put up the flag.  A few minutes after mailing the cards a couple of teens stole the mail while my wife was watching them.  The police officer seemed a little miffed that we would use our mailbox.  He informed us that there were two other incidents of stolen mail in our neighborhood this morning.  Using the red flag is basically a way to tell all the neighborhood mail theives to take your mail according to this officer's lecture.

We installed a steel locking mailbox many years ago and usually drop the mail off at a local drop box.  Due to the gas prices we decided not to drive to the local box this morning.  This makes me sad and angry.  My wife has a gift of encouragement. I am sure she will continue to write notes but this kind of thing makes one wish for the good old days.

I hope you all enjoy this phot of Kathy with our tomatoes for sale in the gazebo just a stones throw from the mailbox.  We have many things for which to be thankful so we can learn to drive to the mailbox.

Paul, it is so unfortunate that these things happen, a not so funny parallel store is this. A local farmer having way too many zucchini puts a table out by the road with a sign that says free. When I drove by later the zucchini was on the ground and the table was gone. Go figure. Steve

People wonder how we who live in ND can stand it here (because of our harsh winters) but your post is a good reason, crime is almost Nil here in ND including mail theft. I'm not embarrassed to say that those kids should be spanked even if they are teens. Their parents should have to pay the fine for the mail theft and the officer should have a talk-en to by his superior for giving you crap for being trusting. I said it once earlier today and I will say it again: "30 below keeps the riff-raff out".

Doesn't necessarily make me wish for the good old days, but I do wish that the parents today would practice the same type of loving, structured discipline that my parents practiced (and that I am using today with my children).

Sorry to hear about your incident.  Maybe you should put your flag up and put some fake "Got you Caught on Video Camera" cards inside - and do just that!  Video cameras seem to be catching all sorts of bad behavior these days.

Kudos to your sweet wife for her encouraging work.  Keep up the good work - and by the way, your tomatoes look wonderful!

I don't understand why take someone's mail.  What a foolish, senseless deed.  The sad thing is that those teens likely got away with it & their 'pranks' will escalate.  You have a generous attitude towards this.

Paul,

I'm sorry to hear of your snail mail woes.  Those teens must be bored for them to do stupid things.  It's stupid and illegal to tamper with mailboxes and its contents.

Letterwriting is a lost art these days.  I congratulate your wife for keeping it up.  It's always a treat to receive a nice letter in the mail.  It's more personal.

Hope the same thieves don't get those beautiful tomoatoes.  Also hope the police at least promised to try to hunt down the thieves instead of making you feel like the person at fault!

Paul, We have never had our mail stolen (that I know of).  That is terrible and actually is a federal crime.  You should report it to the postal service.

I think that I have two problems with this, first off that teenagers would think that it is cool or funny to steal someone's mail, and two, what else does the police officer have to do?  I thought that tampering with the U.S. Mail was a felony.  I guess that Police Officers are like the rest of us, a couple of lazy ones put the rest of them in a bad light!

Lets hope they can read! Lets hope the parents can do something with their kids. I cannot tell you what my dad would have done to me if I had done that.

Steve,

I've heard numerous zucchini stories but that is a new one. Thanks for caring.  Paul

Bob,

I have known only a few people from ND and everyone of them have been people of integrity.  I have never ventured to your great state but will be traveling through SD on my way to Kentucky when the house closes. We have lived here in Woodinville for 25 years and only recently  have had problems with theft.  Makes moving to be near the children and grandchild even a little sweeter.

Celina,

Thanks for caring.  Statistics sadly show us that most of this children don't really have parenting in the homes.  In our neighborhood most parents work and their teenagers are pretty much doing whatever they please during the day.  Somehow our culture has been deiceived to believe that children need parenting before school age but it is ok to let our teenagers be unsupervised.   Paul

Dahlia,

Are you able to grow your namesake flower. We have perfect conditions for growing dahlias here in Western Washington and they are just beginning to bloom.  Thanks for your kind words.

Rosalinda,

Thanks for your kind words.  Yes, my wife's writing is a blessing to many and her wit has brought a smile to many faces upon receiving her notes.  She was recently gone for over two weeks to help with a grandchild and she wrote me a note every day.  What an awesome person to live with for 37 years.  I am a very fortunate man.

Pat,

To our knowledge people have never stolen any produce from our little gazebo market.  We have let people help  themselves for  20 years.  We used to leave the money out so people could make  change if needed but a few years ago the money  started being stolen so we  installed a drop box.

Shirley, Tony and Darcy,

Yes, I understand stealing mail to be a federal offense also. I don't think children have any idea how serious it is and those who would take another's mail certainly have no since of propriety.

Paul
