lol Nice post!  We all should learn from this.  Here's a marketing tip to think about on the other side of the coin.  Put an interesting, attention grabbing hold advertisement about you on the hold "space" (if your phone service can do this) rather than some elevator music.  Be creative.  This will ensure that your client won't want to do one of those ten but will want to listen to what you have to say.

Steven -  speaker phone or head set are both great inventions

Christine - what did we do before technology?

Robert- I have SOOOO done that - forgot who, why, which loan etc.

Tony & Darcy - if you hang up after 10 minutes when do you ever speak to anyone?

Paul-- ok that made me spit on my computer screen -- too funny

Kevin - you're right a very creative hold message would be a great option.

I just sit in a cold mind numbing stare so I cant remember why it was I was even calling this person to begin with. I usually just hang up after about 15 minutes and cross it out of my daytimer.

I love the comments here and can relate to them all. I make so many calls and work on so many short sales that when my RE partner walks in the room he says "Are you calling GMAC on ..... property?" or "Oh, you're on with Countrywide, don't forget...." We know the hold music for all of the companies!! :) I never hang up though unless I have to leave for an appt. One tip though, don't call GMAC around 4, I held for an hour while working on some marketing and when it hit an hour it redialed and put me back AT THE BEGINNING and the message started saying "your hold time is approximately 49 minutes after I had gotten down to 5! That time I did hang up and waited til morning!! Does anyone do double calls and dial on 2 phones? I'm not brave enough to do that, I would really forget who I was calling... my partner does it and makes me crazy having 3 phones on hold... such is our life these days!

Add "sing new lyrics to the hold music"

My office mates do not appreciate the nuances of my humming /  singing, but I do make up short sale lyrics to pass the time. Best done at the Home Office where my greyhounds join in...

I always have 2 phones going... Old habit from my Silicon Valley Days before free or unlimited minutes. Used to be Two Land lines, mine and the one on the desk behind me,  Now its usually my cell and my desk line, which has two extensions, so sometimes I can be on hold with two companies and answer an inbound call.  Only to discover the one I put on hold to answer the inbound call got to me while they were on hold and HUNG UP! OMG, have to start the process all over...
