These are the things I love about Aiken, SC
The Sunsets - When I first moved to the Aiken area, one of the first things I noticed was that Aiken had the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen. I don't know if it is the lack of pollution, or the amount of wide open spaces, but I do know that the sky turns the most amazing colors that I have ever seen . When I take a few moments and sit and enjoy this spectacular view at the end of a busy day, I feel amazement, wonderment and a sense of thankfulness.
The Downtown Area- with great specialty shops, a variety of eateries from sandwich shops(I love the Stop Light Deli) to fine dining restaurants(sitting outside in the alley under the weeping willow tree at The Bowery), antique shops, the fountains, and the beautiful parkways.
The Aiken Community Playhouse has very talented performers and is always a great choice for entertainment. I never miss a performance if I can help it.
Hopeland Gardens - the peace and tranquility of the winding paths, the beautiful landscaping, the sounds of nature. You can feel as if you are miles away from the stresses of the world - but in fact you are only feet away from the hustle and bustle of Aiken. The concerts in the park during the summer are wonderful and we can't forget all the memories from all the brides that have planned the wedding of their dreams in this very location (my son married the love of his life here 2 years ago).
The Southern Hospitality of this delightful southern community - This is a community of nice, friendly people who are truly southerners. Even the transplants have adjusted to this lifestyle. People are friendly, you can get a smile and a wave from the strangers and you will see a friend almost everywhere you go.
The Weather- We have a great climate here - we get to enjoy all the seasons, with the freshness that spring brings with all the flowers and trees in bloom, and the beautiful parkways throughout the town. . The summers are hot but not too hot, and they bring a good excuse to escape to the lake or the beach, the fall brings an explosion of colors, and winter brings cold weather but very rarely do we get severe winter weather. If we get a slight possibility of snow, the children won't be able to sleep with the excitement.
The Location - What could be better than this? Aiken has almost anything that you could want or need, but for those occasions that you want to venture out, we are located centrally between the North Carolina Mountains and the South Carolina beaches (only 2-3 hours to the mountains or the beaches). We are also only 1 hour to our capital city of Columbia, SC or ½ hour to Augusta Georgia, and only 2 ½ hours to the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Georgia or Charlotte North Carolina.
The Wonderful Golf Communities - Woodside Plantation has 3 wonderful golf courses and many beautiful homes, a country club and a plethora of amenities all located in the heart of Aiken. The award winning golf community of Cedar Creek is located about 20 minutes from downtown. There are many other golf courses, both public and private, and don't forget our proximity to Augusta, Georgia the home of the Masters golf course.
The Horses - Everywhere you look you will see the horses - small horse farms, large horse farms, horses grazing in front yards, horses trotting down main thoroughfares , horses and buggies, polo fields, and beautifully painted horses on display outside local businesses. You will notice that in this progressive community, we still have many dirt roads to accommodate the equestrian community. There are also a number of equestrian communities with community barns and riding trails. Aiken was built with a large wooded area ( Hitchcock Woods) located in the center of town. This area does not allow motorized vehicles but is great for horses and walkers. I am not a rider, but that does not keep me from enjoying all of the equestrian events available in Aiken.
The Medical Community- We have access to great medical care. There is an award wining hospital here in Aiken with physicians of every specialty. We are also only a short drive to the Augusta, Georgia area where there are 5 large hospital systems including the Medical College of George teaching Hospital and the VA hospital at Fort Gordon.
Aiken's Makin - a wonderful 2 day arts and crafts event with all types of hand made items, great food and entertainment held in the streets parkways on Park Ave. Put this event on your calendar, it will be September 5 &6 and you won't want to miss it.
I Love Aiken, and I enjoy sharing this beautiful city with all the real estate clients who stop by Aiken to check it out. If you are thinking of purchasing a home in this charming city, I would be happy to show you "my town" and help you find the perfect home so that Aiken can become "your town" too.
