Railroad station in Searcy Arkansas

Searcy train station

A day or two ago we put up a picture of the bus stopping in Searcy AR for passengers to board, alight, or have a rest stop.  Lots of us boarded buses to get around.

Here's an old picture of the train depot in Searcy AR.  I think it may be here still but turned into a business location.  Native Searcians may have to tell me.

I hope some people can enlighten us on riding a train because my one experience with train riding was a nightmare.  I was traveling from Arkansas to Georgia and it must have been in the early 60's.  It was a rainy night and water came into the train and stood in the aisles.  I had my young daughter with me and she couldn't get on the floor at all.  Even the bathrooms flooded.

I swore that if I ever got off that train, I'd never board another one....and I haven't.  But for some reason I've always loved the appearance of train depots.  I guess it is the overhanging roofline that I like so much.  One artist had one moved to his property and turned it into his art studio.  That was my type building!

Mary, thanks for enjoying and commenting on the old photos.  Those depots are larger inside than they looked from the photos.  The artist had a nice studio with lots of room.

Dick, that guy in WA is my best friend!  He treats me nice.... unlike these nationally well-known speakers treat me.

Barbara,

I miss the old train stations, when I was in 1st grade my teacher took our class on a train ride, it was so much fun.

Barbara - I miss the old stations, also, but especially the steam locomotives. I have never ridden a train (other than commuter) in the U.S., In Japan, we used to joke about the difference between first class and coach, you got to stand on carpet floors.

I did get to drive a yard engine once, on a school field trip.

Dick, I feel pleased that I'm chosen.  Fix me up NICE!

Mary, imagine a field trip of riding a train!  Fun, fun, fun!

Mike, driving down the road from Searcy to Little Rock, about 50 miles, there were numerous depots on the side of the road because the road paralleled the tracks.  I always liked the depots.  I guess the train was like a bus and stopped everywhere.

Barbara I have had many wonderful experiences riding on trains, far more than bad ones.  Back in the day when you could ride the Canadian National Railway across the country it was a fun time... sleeping in the little berths, eating in the dining car and watching the scenery click by... CNR and CPR were the big players then and they competed for business by being top notch services.

Georgina, you were in another country?  Canada?  I did ride the very fast train that they have in Europe once and it was a pleasure.  The United States has just not perfected train travel in the last 50 years.  But old movies showed them to be fun with the berths, fancy dining cars, etc.  Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Neat picture of the old train station Barbara. There is a old train station in a small town not too far from here. It is like walking back in time...

Thanks,Dick.

Michael, train stations are still used perhaps in small towns?  See my blog today about Bald Knob, AR and don't laugh at the name Bald Knob.  LOL

Barbara - how can I laugh at Bald Knob (which I have been through often) when I used to live in Paint Lick, KY and have been to Big Bone Lick, KY

Barbara, this looks like the one I remember on S. Main.  Is that the one you were thinking of?  The one across from the library had some outside seating with a top over it,  as I remember.

Ludean, I seem to be able to remember it but look at today's depot and see what you think.

Based on the track location and the water tower in the background, that depot is likely the current DK&S depot still on Main Street. It is not as large now so probably a portion was torn down. I believe the water tower was for the International Shoe Company next door. During my lifetime the tracks ran across the street to The Thompson Co. which was later Commercial Printing and now torn down.

Roger, I had not noticed the water tower in the background.  This building does look like one that is still on Main Street.  I do remember Commercial Printing.  Thanks for the comment.

The depot in the picture looks like it was located on the tracks that beebe capps road was built over.

The depot looks like it was located on the tracks that used to run on what is now beebe capps road.

I noticed in the background that there is a covered loading dock. That loading dock was located behind a feed store. Youngs tires was built where the feedstore used to be.

Marc, thanks for that information.  It is always confusing to me to find the old depots.

This is the old D,K&S Railroad Depot. It's located on S Main, across the street from Simmons First National Bank.

Thanks, M&NA Enthusiast.  It looked pretty good then, didn't it?  I like the guy in the over coat.  Men look so good in them and it amazes me that so few in the south will wear them.
