I just read this great article about a sales person for a domain marketing company trying to sell a domain name and the potential client not understanding what a great deal it was to her company to buy it.

It points out that most small businesses don't yet understand the need for a great presence on the web. They don't realize that not only do you need a great domain name, you may need several. And that names that are cute or just mirror your business name won't get you the most potential clients to your site.

Remember domain names are just like regular real estate. It's all about location, location, location. And it's about availablity.  If you own jackdoerealestate.com only persons looking for you specifically will type that in. A new client that has never been to your arera will have no idea. They will type in the most generic information to find what they are looking for. Think about when you search the web. What do you type in the search box? Is it cute as a button puppies or puppies for sale?

Your domain name should be one that is focused on what is searched not what can be remembered. Most people will not take our your business card and type in your name. Most people sit down and search Google or another search enginge with the basics about what they want.

If you are in real estate remember that a name that is easy to find, and will be easy to "organically" raise in the search engines are the best. Names with your city and something about homes, houses, are going to be better.

A domain name is also yours for as long as you want it. They can be sold or traded. It's real estate. Invest well and it will be your spot to all of the world.

Speaking again to real estate agents, if you work in a market with a high relocation rate, a tourist destination, or just a transient market it's absolutely imperrative you have a web site with a domain name that is easly to find. Also if you move from office to office it's still there, working for you. Old clients still find you, new clients find you. It's  a win win all the way around.
