Don’t Forget To Check The Medicine Cabinet

Realtors should always address security issues when listing a property and from what I can see most do.  However, there is one area that is often overlooked, the medicine cabinet.  Clients are advised to secure valuables such as jewelry and other easily lifted items and at least put them out of plain view so not to temp those who might be easily tempted. Who would think that prescription drugs would be on the list of someone’s most valuable items? Make sure you bring this up in discussions with your sellers about home security particularly during open house times.  The most desired and often regularly used prescriptions can be easily lifted.  It’s hard to deny someone use of the bathroom where the door can be closed without question, which makes it easy work for those who visit an open property in search of drugs that they can use or sell.

Security Recommendations:

  • Sellers should take an inventory of valuable property and note where they are securing the items on the list.  It’s all to easy to misplace something and assume the worst only to find it later.

  • Don’t forget to have sellers check their medicine cabinet particularly for pain or anxiety/ depression type medications.

  • Offer to place a card next to the listing sheets or on open house sign in sheets to inform visitor: Security and Safety Are Important Please Sign In!
  • Items of value have been inventoried, secured or removed from this property.”

  • Make it part of your security policy to keep all records of visitors and co-broke showings until the property closes.

  • At open houses Realtors should always request visitors to sign in.  “The seller has requested that every one sign in for security reasons.”  Would you please sign the open house register?  Visitors should at least sign their name – even if false it could provide clues if something were to happen. Once the Realtor has them signed in they can highlight the homes features and invite them to explore the property freely.
