What is your Google Page Rank?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with List In MLS Realty, LLC

I have recently realized how important it is for a webpage to have a high Google Page Rank (PR).  If you don't know what PR is you'll want to download and start using the Goggle toolbar.  Once you have the toolbar installed every page you visit will will show the page rank on the toolbar.  My website (www.listinmls.com) currently has a PR of 0 as of today 3/23/2007.  Hopefully by the time many of you read this bloq it will be higher.  Every time it changes for the better I am going to celebrate and I will post a blog with the good news.

It's my understanding that if websites are competing for placement for a particular keyword, the site with the higher PR will be listed first.  Their are many factors which make up how Google ranks your page the most important being the amount of high PR sites that link directly to your site.  I manage another website (www.stillwatercharters.net) for a friend with a fishing guide business and his page somehow already received a PR of 2 I think it's because we had one PR3 liking to it.  Please give me some feedback on these websites as we are constantly trying to improve them.  I recently began using IDX Pro to display interactive maps with listing data overlayed in an effort to make my site more attractive to home buyers shopping on the internet.  It's a really neat tool you can check out at www.listinmls.com/listingspro.htm    I'm trying to get to the top of Google for general terms like "Fort Myers Real Estate".  My website listinmls.com is currently listed 5th when searching for "list in mls" which is my actual URL and other companies are coming up first.  Somehow, my Active Rain profile comes up first for another keyword I have been targeting "list in mls fort myers".  This is something I can't even get my website to do....yet.  How is your website rated?

Sandra, If it's a Google toolbar you can go to the toolbar options under the more tab and make sure page rank and page info is checked.

You can throw your URL in www.mygooglepagerank.com too.  That is if you're having trouble with the google tool bar.

That's completely wrong.  Google PR means nothing.  I don't know why people even BOTHER with it - it means absolutely NOTHING.

Regularly, I see PR 4,5 sites outrank higher PR sites.  All the time.  In fact, my sites are a PR5 and I outrank many higher ranking sites.  It's just NOT an indicator of anything.

I don't even look at it - ever.  The ONLY thing I may use it for is analyzing a potential link partner.  If they have a PR0 it could mean it's a new site (which is basically worthless) or a banned site (which is definitely worthless).  Other than that - I could care less.....

Spend your time creating good content, which will enable you to get good one way, inbound links.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between Mark's and Fred's comments.  I have watched the blog portion of my P2A site climb to a PR5 in a few months.  In that same time frame, it has moved up quite well in the free positions on Google.

That said, at one point it had better keyword position than the site itself (has it's own domain name pointer), though it had a lower page rank.  It still boils down to a statement that's borne out by how well blogs do in the search engines:  "Regularly updated relevant content over the long haul will garner search engine good will."

Here is a great tool to look at PR for all pages on your website

I have to disagree with Fred saying PR means nothing. It definitely gives you the overall popularity of a site. Do you think sites with PR of 8 or 9 mean nothing. Of course not they are very popular sites that many people view each day. I can't say that for sites with PR or 0 or 1. They get minimal traffic. Sure a site with a lower PR can place higher than sites with higher PR for certain keywords. That mainly has to do with the content.

Creating good content, inbounds links, etc... will all contribute to increasing your PR.

I currently have a PR of 4 www.realtorcraigs.com and am trying hard to get to 5. Each increase seems to be exponential so it gets tougher to reach the next.

Then how do you explain why my PR5 sites consistently outrank sites that are PR6???

If you follow SEO sites and people who do this for a living (as I do), you will find most people don't put any value in PR whatsoever.

I would suggest you don't waste your time on something that doesn't matter.

I will say that PR does have some value, but it doesn't seem to necessarily take into account the breadth of terms that you may be found on.  Most people look at their PR of an individual page which is largely the result of inbound links.  You definitely want to have a strong PR, but sometimes even with a lower PR, you may generate a good amount of traffic, and most importantly a good amount of leads. :)

I also was told it had some importance and to keep an eye on it.  I do check it occasionally.  It was a 3PR last year and a 4PR this year---I checked it against some of the larger sites that I know has many visitors each day and they are 8 and 9's.   Thanks for the interesting posts and all the views regarding it.

I agree with Fred - I have a number of sites that have PR that range from 0 to 6.  I have found no direct corelation between having a high PR and top placement.  The sites that have the highest placements in Google for us are mostly PR2 and PR3 sites.

In the old days it seemed to have a more direct impact.  Then for several years it was more important for exchanging links than for placement - but the links were key for placement.

Now days I see little to no real value in the Google PR ranks.

If you hang out on some of the SEO sights you may read that Google is not updating the page ranks and making the info available as they once were. This is to keep web masters from tweaking their sites to get higher rankings. I have also read that their is another ranking number being used that has been referred to as Local Rank although the meaning of it is not clear.

As others have said I have a page rank of 3 which has not changed in 6 months although the number of back links has increase by a factor of 10. I also have a lower page rank  than sights that have less than 300 back links. I also consistently come up on the search engines one page 1 2 or 3 for important key words where other competing sites with higher page rank come up on page 20-100 on the search pages.

So I agree that what you are seeing for page rank is not important. It is all about good content.
