Did you purchase that painting because it matched your couch?

Why do people purchase art?

As a residential Realtor ® in College Station, I have the opportunity to view artwork on a regular basis when showing different homes.  I've also come to love viewing the original artwork that can be different galleries and shops around the College Station and Bryan areas.  Lately, I find myself asking, "Why do people choose the artwork that they choose for their home or office?"

(The following artwork can currently be found in College Station, TX.)

Did it match your furniture?

Frederic Remington

< Painting by Frederic Remington on display at the MSC Forsyth Center Galleries on the Texas A&M campus.

Was it a picture of a place that you visited?

Benjamin Knox

Manhatan Beach, CA ,,,,by Benjamin Knox.  Note the picture is somewhat distorted due to the flash and photography.  Benjamin's studio is in College Station.  He is best know for his paintings that depict the spirit of Texas A&M Univeristy

Did the painting speak to you?

Sondra, appreciating art shows depth of the soul and a love of beauty. I love artwork of all kinds. Some times it may be a piece I can't understand what the artist is trying to convey but I try to work my mind and heart and sense it out. What I very much liked in this post was how you tried to ask those great questions of how a piece of art like a painting might match various parts of the house. Very creative on your part. Some paintings do speak to us. Like one of my favorites, The Scream, that I can relate to when my day or life can be maddening at times. Thanks for the work you put into this one.

Thank you for your post and I really like the paintings, I think they showed up well.

Believe it or not, I paint with oils and water colors. I love art!

Sondra - I think that's why I don't have any artwork in my house! I love art, but just can't figure out how to buy it.

Sondra, I have an affinity for art. I would never match a piece of artwork with the couch. I would buy a new couch to match the artwork! Art is what moves our very soul. Art connects with us as individuals and I still have "family art" on my walls. I also have the art that makes me feel good. These are all beautiful.

Yard Art in Tucson, AZSondra,

I'm with Deb on this.  I buy original artwork because I love the piece.  I have purchased paintings in all media, sculpture in wood, bronze, and hammered junk iron.  This is in someone else's yard, but on the street, so I consider it mine, too, although I'm sure I can't afford it.  LOL

Sondra, I am soooo fickle. I have way too many reasons why I would collect a piece. (LOL)

Trey, thinking about it, I really like the paintings that you have in your real estate office.  No flamingo's there.

Carolyn, knowing that you are an artist yourself, it would be interesting to see what you might collect.  Fickle is good!!!

Mike, lol.  I'm starting to have a real appreciation for public art myself.

Deb, well worded.  I'm sure some of the gallery and art shop owners in my area wish that everyone was like you.

Marchel, thanks for the compliment on my mom's picture.  She got burnt out on painting years ago, so I've felt really blessed to have been able to get this particular painting.

Lindsey, when your mommy duties don't keep you so busy, I predict that you will have time to figure out what kind of art really interests you enough to incorporate it into your home.  (I used to feel exactly like you.)

Robert, Initially, I was not surprised, but then again...thinking about your exceptional photography skills, maybe I am surprised that you paint also.

Gary, Thank you for your comments.  Lately, I have found myself really thinking about art.  What is says, what it means to both the artist and the viewer.  I need to see if I can find a picture of The Scream on the IInternet so that I see what you are referring to.

Hi Sondra...I think Gary may have used The Scream on a MeMe which asked a question about favorite artist.

I never buy any art work because it goes with a couch or the colors of the wall, etc.  They speak to me.  Now, sometimes I find out we are no longer on speaking terms or our conversations have become few and far beween.

You are so fortunate to have a painting by your mom.
