You can show it but my house is a mess. Two types make this statement.

messy kitchen

Showing property this weekend, I heard the old phrase, "But my house is a mess."  The seller asked if I could show it at 5:00 instead of within the hour as I'd requested.  That was outside the schedule so I said no.  Then I called back and said, "This buyer is looking for a house and we really need to see it."  I said I'd make excuses for the house being a mess.  And I did.

But when we entered the house.....well, as we approached the entrance to the house and noticed grass not mowed, debris on the lawn and a porch with spider webs, etc., ....the buyer said, "Well, she didn't lie.  It IS a mess."  And it was.  From one end to the other.  It was an obvious thing.  This was the way they lived.

But there are two types of people who say this.  I love my colleague who said about his grandmother, "She vacuums every day and every third day she moves the furniture and vacuums under it."  That's one type and she'd say at any day and any time, "But my house is a mess."  Even though it was perfect.

nice kitchen

The other is the type I had today.  She knew her house was a mess but it would always be a mess!  No matter what!  It would look that way!! I could have waited a month and it would have looked the same except a few more days to get worse.

So we need to know our types because they'll both say the same thing.  "My house is a mess."  I like the grandmotherly type better!

Barbara,

Yes I am like Mary on housekeeping. That is just one of our pet peeves. I love to clean with bleach. My grown kids still when they smell bleach they say it reminds them of MOM HA!!

Lol! That is so funny and true. I hear that excuse all the time. It goes to show that sellers all have a different idea of clean and messy and sometimes that can be a scary thing.

This is so funny and I agree. I've heard that too and sometimes they are really telling the truth and other times I wished MY house was "that" messy!

True and I agree. I see houses that are a mess and the people make statements that that they are so embarrassed at the mess. Kinda makes you wonder if they always live in a messy house...

Tinker, I try to get Mary to hire someone to help her clean and she absolutely refuses.  She must be up at midnight doing her chores.

Carol, so which kitchen is yours now?  lol

LaNita, thanks for the comments.  It was funny about Grandma moving the furniture every three days to vacuum under it!

Michael, when they make that statement, at least it indicates their awareness of the mess.  Maybe a little rehab would help them.

Some people will always live this way (messy) I had a client who kept their home much worse than your first photo. No matter how many times I told her how important it was to keep the home clean or at least picked up...she never made the time to do it.  I did not relist this home at my request!

I had the same thing happen this year.  I really didn't want to relist.  But the house sold promptly after I no longer had it.  : (

Barbara - I know what you mean.  If you would've waited until later, it would've looked the same.  I feel sorry for people like that.  :)

Debi, absolutely!  I know it would have!  Perhaps they feel sorry for us....always worried about a clean house and what people think and we could be rolling around in happy dirt instead!  lol

My Grandma was like the one you speak of.  She cleaned everyday, had air-purifiers in every room and would stay up till midnight cleaning the night before the day the maid came.  It drove my Grandpa crazy, she would always say "well I don't want her to see the house a mess".  I really think she just liked talking with the lady.

Sellers complain to us inspectors about that. Oh, my house is not clean today. Actually, we do not care unless it is something extreme -- pet filth, etc. I have never written up ring around the collar.

Debi, I always thought the problem with having a dog or cat in the house was the hairs everywhere.  You pet the animal and then you have to cook and hairs are everywhere.  But I guess no one ever died from a cat or dog hair.  lol

Jeremy, you may be related to my colleague!  That is so funny that she had a maid and cleaned up beforehand.  Then they spent the day talking.  lol

Steven, only YOU would think of ring-around-the-collar!

Barbara, the ones that say their house is a mess when it is neat as a pin, always crack me up.

This was a very fine post and has been featured in the Group Diary of a Realtor. Congratulations.

And isn't it a joy when you have sellers who more or less fall into the category of the grandmother? I have two right now that I know are ALWAYS in tip top showing condition. It's just the way they live. It's a lot of stress to keep a house in showing condition if it isn't your nature. . .but it sure helps!

Barbara,

How do you make excuses when it so obvious by the lawn, etc. that the home is ALWAYS a mess?  Did you sell it?  HEe Hee
