We All Have an Opinion...

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

WooHoooo! We all have opinions because we're all human and all have different thinking. That's why we're all unique. BUT (that dreaded 'but') sometimes we need to take a step back and be quiet for a moment and think before we pound the keyboard.

I was waiting at the Chiropractor for my husband to get finished and picked up the Honolulu Advertiser. I read about Obama visits Hawaii and I saw that on the news last night as well so I moved on. Obama connects with the plate lunch spirit on Hawaii vacation and then I saw a picture of Obama jogging on Kailua Beach too.

I skimmed through more of yesterday's paper (you'd think they'd have todays) and then I was about to pass the Horoscopes and then flipped back. I read mine first ...it said the usual girlie stuff.....love and blah blah.  Then I read my husband, Gary's horoscope.  It said, "We all have opinions but sometime you have to learn that sometimes you have to keep quiet and not voice them".

Now, my husband argues with the news people on tv (and I miss half of what they're saying because he has his opinion lol). Anyway, I told him about it when we got in the car and he repeated what I just told him back to me. Hmmm.

I stopped to think about how so often we all are adamant about our opinions and feel the need to voice them. Sometimes I watch comment streams go back and forth and notice that sometimes someone can comment just to stick it to someone as well.

I had a grand learning lesson many years ago.

Being "honest" with others and expressing my opinions meant that I did not tell someone my opinon with the ulterior motive to hurt them. At that time in my life I wanted to be totally honest. I ended up hurting many people thinking I was doing the right thing. Be still my friend.

I'm glad I learned that lesson before blogging came into my life becaues I am still adamant about that lesson when it comes to blogging online.

  • There is that demeaning way some 'talk' to each other here that can break that connection with our purpose here.
  • And then there is that awesome professional and humane way we 'talk' to each other on ActiveRain that will strenthen our connection.

I think I will stick to the latter.

I love the friends I have made here.

Sally,  Well said post. I ran across one earlier today that I was VERY SORRY I had clicked in to. I found the author's criticism and complaint far too harsh and it pained my heart. There is a time and place and this wasnot the proper forum for her unkind words. I hope she read this post.

Not voice an opinion?  LOL!  I just gave a talk to an investment club and offered one of many ways to "protect your assets" (i.e., keep from getting sued).  One of the top ten ways to avoid getting sued is to stop talking so much!  Nice post!

  • #1 is something we have all seen here.....and it's not becoming at all.  Power Struggles, Ego, lack of good communication skills....whatever it's not becoming.  I have cringed sometimes at the way some people will comment back.......

Sometimes I wonder if folks have really read the posts, don't you? Actually, many times the questions they are asking are already in the comments from AR or others. IF it is a issue or post you are concerned about you should read ALL the comments before asking the same thing again, IMHO.

So true Sally.  Fact is, not every opinion has to be opined.  Not every idea has to be broadcasted and not every question has to be answered.

In real estate practice, I've learned that it is often to say as little as possible.  Never, never, never voice an opinion or belief about religion, politics or folks' appearance unless you are on very safe ground and there is no way of knowing what that is unless you've lived with someone for years.

There's nothing wrong with giving your opinion on something but sometimes people take it too personally so I might just keep it to myself. I won't even get involved with an opinion on religion....I believe what I believe and I think that whatever you believe in is your business as long as it doesn't hurt others.

No question about it- except, for some of us, the "fine tuning" is a work in progress! Steering clear of controversy in the form of politics, religion, etc. has always been my MO with anyone that has chosen my services- that's not what they're paying me for.

Sally I try to remember "Do no harm".  If telling you my opinion will do no harm I will (if asked).  I am not so narcissist to think that you really want my opinion.   However, not sharing my opinion could do more harm in some instances.  Either way it is not always what you say but how you say it.

Sally, so true, like the old saying "Opinions are like hiney holes (for better use of words, usually A$$, grin) everybody has one". Just learning how to express them is the challenge. Great post.

Hope your hubby is doing well, chiropractors are never fun.

Linda: I ran across one as well although I always take a step back and put myself in someone else's shoes. For one...we can't see the mannerisms...another is we can't hear the tone of voice. Also, I've learned to wait for awhile, ask some opinions and usually I either delete the post that sounded a littel harsh...or I revise and edit. We'll have our own opinions on what we think of another's opinions as well Linda...but hey....there are ways to get around that. Ignore it and move on...maybe the person was just having a lousy day....

Sally, We all need to be totally cognizant of what we say because it can possibly offend others.

Staying away from politics and religion is an excellent start.  Thank you for the beautiful and eloquent post.

Sally- I have to tell you a funny story. We were on a listing appointment and right before they signed the listing agreement they asked us who we were voting for. They are small business owners so I had a pretty strong feeling of what their concerns are and they had mentioned concerns about higher taxes, so I said to them, as soon as you sign the listing I will tell you:) So they did, and I told them since I knew we were on the same page about taxes. We had a really big laugh after that:)

Now as far as the seriousness of this post, I wish someone who just left me 3 very nasty emails on AR would have read this post, she really hurt my feelings and then I had to go on, I am only human after all , and sticks and stones do hurt.

    Sally,

It takes a lot of discipline to just keep quiet sometimes.  We have friends who do not share our political preferences so we always remind ourselves not to talk about politics.  As usual, I enjoyed your post.

Katerina: Yeah...and the ones who do this sort of stuff should be reported to AR.  That is not acceptable.

Diane: Thanks for popping by too!

WooHoo, I guess you know I have no problem voicing my opinion. I do however always try to do it in a nice way. And if I'm wrong or someone disagrees with me I prefer they tell me. I need to know. Who knows I amy even be wrong.   Ok scratch that last remark:)

Randy: Yeah...when Gary's not feeling good he nags  oops....whines   oops...doesn't talk in his normal tone :)

BB: Yeah...it makes a difference. Sorry I was abrupt on the phone...for some reason I always feel like I'm interrupting your work day ...sorry. I don't mind people telling me I may be wrong...or they have their own opinion. What I don't agree with is giving wrong info or doing it with ulterior motives. :)

    And hey...you're always right....after me :)

Woo Hoo, Another superb writing. I find myself not expressing as many opinions as I once might have. I can read other opinions and just accept that they are different than mine and respectfully disagree or in many instances just let them go.
