Sea Island is a private barrier island off the coast of Georgia. The island is home to the world famous Cloister Hotel which is owned and operated by the Sea Island Company, Inc. Sea Island was founded in 1928 by Howard Coffin. The Cloister Hotel has hosted many world leaders. Former United States President George H.W Bush and his wife Barbara spent their honeymoon on Sea Island. Sea Island was host to the 2004 G-8 Summit.
Starting in the summer of 2003, Sea Island began a $500 million renovation. Sea Island company built a new Cloister Hotel, Beach Club, Spa and Tennis Center. There are over 500 homes and condos on Sea Island. Members and guests have access to the Cloister Hotel, Beach Club, Spa, Tennis Center, Retreat Golf Club and The Lodge. The Retreat Golf Club is located on Saint Simons Island and is home to a championship golf course designed by professional golfer and Saint Simons native Davis Love III.
The other 2 golf courses, Plantation and Sea Side, are also located on Saint Simons Island at The Lodge. The Lodge has played host to many amatour golf events including the SEC men's golf championship annually.
Today, Sea Island continues to be the family destination which Howard Coffin dreamed of over 75 years ago.
