New Year's Resolutions are fleeting notions. For 95% of the people who make them, by January 31 most have abandoned their primary resolutions or admitted defeat in the achievement of their goals.
One resolution I try very hard to stick with is staying mentally nourished by reading a variety of books both current and classic. Some are permanent residents on my nightstand, others return to the office library shelf after one reading.
Two books that I heartily recommend are The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr & Tony Schwartz, and Today Matters by John Maxwell.
In a world perpetually obsessed with managing time, The Power of Full Engagement clears the air with its fresh premise: It's not time, but energy that we must manage. Loehr & Schwartz brilliantly explain the physical, mental, social and emotional demands on our reservoirs of energy. They then propose strategies for refueling to sustain a better performance level over time. They speak of the categories influencing energy as "muscles" that need to be exercised, taxed and then restored. Oscillation is a brilliant concept of rhythmic restoration on all fronts. If you feel you've been in a losing battle over getting more out of your 24 hours, apply some of the recommendations in this book.
Equally refreshing is John Maxwell's Today Matters. Using a similar schema of categories, Maxwell proposes small awareness changes that enable us to be the best that we can be and accomplish positive change in the world.
