"Christmas Comes to Columbia, SC! 'Tis the Season!

By

"And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again."  The kids, ours and everybody's have been sitting around OUR house doing their summer activities.  In other words, nothing.  Enjoy it now guys!  It's like Dennis Quaid said in that great movie Everybody's All American, "It's just something that happens to you when you're young."

Oh, there have been job tryouts and dance trips.  My son was trying for a job at Outback Steak House.  I was pulling for that one for the leftovers.  Remember when we used to call it a ‘doggie bag'?  "Yes, please wrap that up for me in a doggie bag."  Now we call it a ‘to-go box', and the dog doesn't even have a chance to sniff it.  We have to have it to eat!  With the price of gas... well, let's not get into that.  He did get a job with a local investor / house rehabber, but said that one was too much like work!

My daughter has had two dance camps and one big event this summer.  She dances with Tammy Johns and Carolina Free Style at the Dance Station in Chapin.  They had a nice trip to New York this year.  They won all three events entered with first place trophies, saw all the sights plus a Broadway show and danced on the Today Show.  Proud old Dad has the DVD to prove it!  When I get better at webcasting, I'll post it somewhere for you.  Of course the substitute weatherman that morning said they were from North Carolina and mispronounced our town of Chapin, leading me to believe it's no wonder they have a hard time forecasting the weather.  But, my wife was off camera with our good friend and fellow Realtor Terri Scheper yelling, "That's SOUTH Carolina!"  So he did get it corrected.  Matt Lauer was very hospitable to them all and cut up with the girls during breaks.  He knows which Carolina it is!  I've heard he likes to play golf here.

My brother who has stayed with us some this summer said being around the teenagers helps keep him feeling young.  Well, it keeps me on edge.  It's like our kids say, "Unless you're staying in trouble and driving your parents crazy what's the point?"  They're actually good kids, but like all teenagers they have their days.  A boss once that told me the best thing for kids is to keep them busy.  Charlie, he said, that keeps them off the streets and out of trouble.  I told my kids, go over to his house and stay busy!

Ah, some feedback from my first try at blogging!   "Love your blog!   Do mention the great folks around here (Chapin/Ballentine/Irmo) and in Columbia.  The good music and helpful shop owners and the good teachers who work so hard.   Our medical care is getting really good in the general area also.   I can see a lot of positive changes since I have lived here for the past 12 years now.   Good luck!  Love, Jo."  Thanks Jo.  Great point about the medical facilities!  They are convenient to area neighborhoods and modern.  Click here to see a really good Slideshow of Columbia on our company website.

And Frank mentioned the Clemson Extension Service for the Japanese Beetle problem.  Thankfully the beetles have flown away for another year, but I agree that the Clemson Extension Service is a wonderful resource to find out about plants and soils and problem pests.  http://hgic. clemson.edu/

Welcome to ActiveRain, and congratulations on your two blog posts.  We spent two years in South Carolina, when Larry was stationed in Charleston, and we loved it there.  'Bet it's changed a lot since then!  Thanks for adding me as an associate, and I hope you become a subscriber - it's a great way to make sure you don't miss the blogs of your ActiveRain pals.

Margaret, as you know we have a lot of folks that have come through South Carolina, particularly with Fort Jackson right here.  Charleston is wonderful.  I bet you DID enjoy it there.  We love to visit down there.  Thanks for the comment.

My youngest started school today.  I can tell you that I was ready about a week ago.  He on the other hand was not happy to go back to school.
