FEAR....not such a real thing ya know

"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Every time I read this famous speech from Nelson Mandela I read it with different eyes! No matter where you are at in your business, it's our fear that holds us back from moving forward in our lives. So what does FEAR really stand for ? False Evidence Appearing Real

At first I was like, "What? Who is this woman? Shirley MacLaine incarnate?" But then you state it came from Nelson Mandela. O.K. - That guy has seen the dark side of humanity. I will take note of what he says. Thanks.

Jazz,

Had never read that before.  Wow.  Just bookmarked it so that I can read it again.  I have to agree that fear is probably the number one stumbling block for professionals everywhere.

I just read a little book about the Kaizen method which talks in depth about how to make small change without engaging the portion of your brain that allows you to be fearful.  It says that the reason people are resistent to change of any kind is purely fear.  Our reptilian brains are wired with that "fight or flight" mechanism that kept our ancestors from being dinner....which of course we dont' need anymore.  It overreacts when we are attempting to make changes....even positive ones like diet and exercise.

What does all this mean?  If you make change in small ways, over time it adds up to a much more profound change without the fear.

Example:  If you want to give up chocolate, say you just quit eating chocolate.  Now all you think about is CHOCOLATE.

Instead, say you will eat chocolate...whenver you want.  However, you'll throw the first 1/4 of the bar in the trash before you eat the rest.  You EVER SO SLOWLY increase the amount of the bar that you throw away.  Your brain doesnt' register the deprivation.

So think of how you could avoid fear in change:

Eat one less french fry.

Send on more letter a day to a prospect.

Organize just one drawer.

Commit to reading 5 minutes a day.  Blog 5 minutes a day.

Got a tough decision.  Agree to think about it for one minute at a time.

Sounds really silly...but let me tell you....I've created one heckuva alot of momentum with just a large amount of SMALL changes.  FEAR is becoming less of a demon every day.
