As a Realtor with a specialty in Seniors Real Estate, I've had the privilege of working with widows and widowers who are almost all alone in their homes. All alone, that is, except for their constant companions--- usually, a dog or a cat. This pet is truly an important part of the family, and not to be forgotten, because it can bring such joy to the homeowner.
New homes have been selected that factor in the pet's needs--- a fenced-in back yard, for example, and these requirements can make or break the sale. And, we've all heard the stories about the dog who has alerted assistance for their owner in distress.
One of the websites that I'm sharing with my Seniors is "Dogster.com". Perhaps you've heard it mentioned on the TV program, Greatest American Dog, now showing on CBS. Dogster is a dog and puppy information site with links to adoption services. And yes, there is a companion site, Catster!
Here, you can find details about many, many dog breeds. The characteristics and special features of each breed are explained, and the pictures are adorable. There is veterinary advice, too, although I would always bring a dog to a vet if there was a real concern.
Your dog can have its own webpage on Dogster. He can receive special treats and play virtual games. When you're stuck at home on a rainy day, this can delight kids for a long time.
And if you're looking to adopt a new dog, visit these pages, but I warn you-- Prepare to melt your heart. Lots and Lots of pictures, and Lots and Lots of choices.
Myself, I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in my family. And he's definitely a member of the pack.
Kobe: Patient and loyal, and so cute!
I'm probably not the only Realtor who brings dog biscuits with me on home visits to Seniors. At their request, we've even made visits together to folks who love dogs, but can't keep one-- Kobe is so gentle. Remembering that one of the littlest in the house may actually be one of the biggest members has forged many bonds. Just a visit can bring happiness.
For all you dog lovers, check out Dogster for your breed. It's fun! Kids love it. And Gramma does, too.
