Did I fall for a SCAM?

By
Real Estate Agent with Real Estate

Typically I consider myself pretty conservative and tend to use extra caution while in unfamiliar territory.  While traveling I'm always keeping a watchful eye in congested areas like airports or train stations and  keenly aware of details that seem out of place.  In the age of Internet SPAM offering all kinds of SCAMS I have learned to skim the title and hit delete.Jane Everett DG Languages & Translations

The On-Line World is such a big part of my daily routine that I check in quite often.  Before dinner Monday night I received and email that caught my eye with interest  thinking a couple from the UK that purchased a home a few months ago must have given my name to a friend.  The email from Jane Everett asked that I call her but since the time differential between the East Coast of the United States and England is 5 hours it was too late so I emailed her.

Tuesday I tried unsuccessfully to call and wondered if my cell phone required some special code to make international calls but didn't aggressively look for a solution.  Wednesday morning there was still no response so I sent a second email and did some Google searches with the information I had in an attempt to verify the phone number and email address of the prospective home buyer from the UK that would be arriving next Thursday.

A few details in the email did strike me as odd.  First was the salutation,  "Hi There," a red flag since I was never addressed by name. Next I noticed the spacing of digits between the first and second phone number, could be a simple typo but in a signature you'd expect it to be corrected.  The email also struck me as strange because it was so general but I ignored all the little clues and really thought it was legit.

My google search did turn up an exchange from Twitter.  With a little digging within Twitter I learned that this "Jane Everett" also contacted others around the country and they were trying to figure out where in the world she is relocating.

This is not rock solid evidence of any wrong doing but the Red Flag is waving. BEWARE because"Jane Everett" may not really be out there to purchase a home in your area.

Dan so many scams going on out there that it isn't even funny.  It use to be that they were very easy to identify, but not it is getting harder and harder to tell the cons from the real thing.

I got it too... the world is full of scam artists, but I just don't understand why they waste their time.  They sure waste mine.

Dan, I fell for this scam too.  Oh am I mad!

So a gentleman is coming to Naples next month to take a look at property and tells me he owns this company...while vacationing in another state, I see a car with his company's information all over it parked at where else but a real estate company.  I should've walked in there to see if it was him.  Wouldn't that have been funny!?

Sandra... At least those fools with the new found millions are dumb as stone so there is never a question that their full of it...

George... They are getting difficult to detect.  Don't know what the logic of this one was though.

Mike... Once the morph into higher beings that can use mail merge it will be impossible to tell the difference from legitimate prospects and the scamming jerks.

Lenn... That almost clinches it!  Do you think Jane is just heading the relocation movement for a huge company?  ( joking )

Judy... No need to get mad, get even instead!  Posts like this get the word out so they scammer becomes less effective and may need to completely change their style.

Shannon... If they were actually at someones office it would have been beneficial see the reaction when questioned.  Wonder how far they take it....

Sure Dan.  By the way, I know where you can buy homes for $300 and, by the way, did you know that there are some great bargains in tax sales?

Dan, that is really strange but not surprising! I have been receiving so many "wierdo" type emails and I do know you must be very careful. Would you consider publishing the email so we could keep an eye out in case they use another name?

Thanks for the heads up. Since Lynn said she got one too...it must be a scam of some sort. Good luck and stay safe!

Lenn... I have seen those great deals on infomercials in the wee hours of the morning.  Did a post once asking for success stories but I guess everyone that got a bargain home for a few bucks wants to keep it a secret.

Deb... Thought the graphic would give enough of a glimpse to identify it but here is the full email. Same as Lenn received right down to the spacing error in the phone number.  Since I had just closed on an $800k home from a family relocating from England I assumed they referred a friend.

I'm wondering if anybody takes them up on the deal and also be careful about calling these numbers. I've heard in the past that they can charge you just about any amount for the call and the phone company will make you pay it.

Hi,

Please could someone call me, or let me know when would be a good time to call as I couldn't get through to speak to someone earlier. We are looking to introduce a insurance scheme for our existing and new employees, and I would like to get an idea of the options open to us and how we can offer a insurance scheme to our employees.

I can be reached on either number below.

Thanks,

The one that gets me is Paypal looking for updates. I know it is a scam but the graphics and everything look exactly like EBay and Paypal. Of course, when you click on the link, Windows tells you this is a known Pfishing address...I'd be very cautious and if they ask for money, then you know for sure.

Hi Dan,

We also received emails from the same sender - "Jane Everett" Senior Translator with DG Languages & Translations.

Because we are working with a lot of international customers from Europe, it was not unusal for us to receive emails like that. So, we tried to call and emailed back. We also did not receive any email answers and the phone numbers 'she' provided either do not work, are always busy or the voice mail is full.

So for us it is obvious that it is a scam and will go right into the trash.

I'm definitely thinking scam. I am not a realtor, nor am I looking to sell a home. My email. with the exact same phone numbers was sent under the guise of hiring us to do design work:
