"Stirring the pot"

I have absolutely nothing to add to this post. But when I saw the little "repost" icon in the upper right hand corner. I just had to click on it and see what it did and what it looked like after it did it.

stirring the potIs "stirring the pot" a bad thing? Is stirring the pot on your ActiveRain blog a bad thing?

Someone commented on Rich Jacobson's recent post "In my last post, I tried VERY hard to say what I needed to say, without stirring the pot."

hmmmm as if "stirring the pot" is a bad thing.  Rich's post is referring to one of the ActiveRain Community Guidelines.

Phrase Finder is a web site (UK so some phrases sounds a bit different) where you can find phrases like "stirring the pot"

"sitting on the fence"

"pig in a poke"...

"letting the cat out of the bag"

You can ask about a phrase on the Phrase Finder forum or look up what a phrase means... I looked up "stirring the pot" after seeing that comment on Rich's post

: What does the phrase "to stir the pot" generally mean? And does it mean to be in some way deliberately provocative or irritating? Thanks. - Patty

Deliberately provocative, yes, but not necessarily maliciously. Picture a pot of soup. A lot of ingredients have settled to the bottom, out of sight, until stirred. Metaphorically, a lot of issues/resentments/obligations can drop out of sight when nobody mentions them. One can "stir the pot" to bring issues to the surface, sometimes with malice, but sometimes merely to create awareness and effect change."

The comment on Rich J's recent post  "Free Speech has a Cost"- The ActiveRain Community Guidelines Re-Visited   said "  say what I needed to say, without stirring the pot.without stirring the pot." hmmmm as if "stirring the pot" is a bad thing.  Rich's post is refers to  the ActiveRain Community Guideline (A good thing, a necessary thing):

"We encourage free speech and defend everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. But we don't permit hate speech which contains slurs or the malicious use of stereotypes intended to attack or demean a particular gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or nationality."

I believe Rich revisted that guideline now since comments left anonymously on an ActiveRain members post were found to be criminal....

Do you ever stir the pot on your blog? Can you recognize "stirring the pot" on ActiveRain and in the blogosphere when you see it?

Jeff,

I guess this is the example of reblogging for me. Just to know how it looks and feels.

Thanks

Jon and all, I'm not sure I like how easy the AR gods have made it to do this. I realize some have seen this post that might not otherwise have seen it, but it moved the conversation away from the content creator. I'm going to direct Maureen over here to get her thoughts.

Perhaps this comment will "stir the pot" a bit. :)

It feels odd.  It does not really bother me that there is conversation here so long as you aren't saying mean things about me, but I feel like I should NOT comment here because this is your blog. But that is weird too... I wonder if in the future we will not get the insane volume of comments on a reBlog that we get on post, with people just feeling like they have to say "GPTFS" or something to let the blogger know they stopped by.  W/ a reblog who would they be saying "GPTFS" or HI to?

JoEllen headed to my blog too... and commented there too.

I  have reBlogged three things.  The first two the comments conversation are totally about reBlogging, the third is a lenders post and I posted it on my Outside blog to consumers...

now don't say mean things about me... ;- )

"...it moved the conversation away from the content creator." That's an unintended consequence of reBlogging that I hadn't considered until now. We can say more and show more respect for the original author by writing our own post and linking back to their content, plus that will be less confusing to readers.

I'm not sure that once the novelty has worn off if ""...it moved the conversation away from the content creator." will matter much...

Have you reBlogged or been reBlogged yet John?

I don't want people to reBlog me and feel like they have to write some BS about me to show respect... although when I reBlogged a lender that is kind of what I thought about doing... it was awkawrd.

Many times I have had the feeling that what I was reading in an AR post was not the person's original material.  People tend to write in a certain style that is recognizable.  Maybe the 're-blog' will encourage people to fess up!  There are a lot of good blogs out there that deserve re-posting.

Maureen... I looked through all of the comments on the original post and didn't see a notification there that it had been reblogged. Did you get notified that this was reblogged?

Hey! That was MY comment about stirring the pot. And you'd have to actually read my last post to know why I said that. BTW, I totally called you out in a recent blog and you never even found it =P

To elaborate though, IMHO, I think "stirring the pot" has negative connotations because most people who do so, are only trying to cause trouble by rehashing issues that have already been settled. But then, I call myself a "button pusher". Anybody who knows me, knows this is true. But I push buttons for fun without EVER intentionally hurting anyone's feelings or making someone look bad. And I can usually tell who can take it, and who can't. If someone can't handle it, I don't bother them. It's all about having fun, for me. AND, I believe in doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. And yes, I actually like it when people push my buttons back, as long as they have the same or similar guidelines as I do... meaning I don't want to intentionally hurt anyone.

Jeff,

Stir the pot, not really. Have I disagreed, yes many times. Probably like others I've read some upsetting comments among the members, at times like that I just choose not to participate.

As for "anonymous comments were found to be criminal, yikes!

So this is the first "reblog" I have seen. Thanks for doing it. I agree that "stirring the pot" usually is referring to negative people, but the analogy of soup and goodies lurking in the bottom is a good one. Some things are below the surface and bringing them up is a good thing.

It's too bad they had to call it reblogging, which is confusing with RE Blogging, which is completely different.

Thanks for the experiment... I enjoyed the conversation that followed.  I haven't reblogged anything yet and the couple of blogs I considered were written before the "reblogging" started...

I've stirred the pot so to speak.  There are others that take it out of context I think and "provoke the pot".  After reading your post & then reading the comments I'm confused as to what we are talking about?  Reblogging I don't think is stirring the pot.  A point of view is.  The devils advocate - you always have one in the pot.

Jeff, I usually pass on stirring the pot because although it might increase traffic and views I always try to approach it from how a potential client would see it and the reward to me doesn't outweigh the risk.
