The Active Rain 'Spam-A-Lots'- Opinions Please

Real Estate Agent with Fillmore Realty
The other day I came onto active rain to view the latest in terms of blogs and rankings.  No major changes from one day to the next.  I continue to ‘blog’ as needed or when feeling compelled to do so.   As a result, the Active Rain web-masters reward me for my contributions via their point system.  A gratifying reinforcer!!!

The other day I logged on as usual and ventured over to my local listing/ranking of agents.  To my surprise, there were a couple agents who had been previously “off the radar” and now hold top ranking on for the locale.  How did they achieve this so fast I asked?  With a few minutes of ‘investigation’ I had my answer.  I coined my own phrase to explain this away…they “Spammed their own blogs”…publishing any random thought or topic that seemed to come to mind.  Silly me, I thought the site was a forum for professionals to blog on, at the very least, topics marginally related to real estate.  My varied thoughts were as follows:

  • Aggressive marketing or manipulation?
  • Sour grapes or principled work ethic?
  • A reflection of character or poor judgment?
  • Freedom of speech or misunderstanding of community focus?

If the US government determines there is a monetary short-fall and decides to indiscriminately publish more paper, this has the effect of devaluing the currency.  Personally, I like my “hard earned blogging points” and would hate to think that this becomes a forum of “spamming for dollars”….or rather ’points’.  Would Wikepedia have reached its level of notoriety that it has if its users didn’t adhere to a code of quality?  Here is where I ask for the opinions of my fellow ‘bloggers’ and active rain constituents.  I’m curious to know what others feel / think about this issue?

Sorry, forgot to mention a side thought.  Interesting that this 'new pet peeve' has been perpetrated by agents from the same office (or so it seems)...hey, correct me if I'm wrong, but if I keep responding to my own post, will I get additional points for each

Hi David, Unfortunately spamming for points has always been an issue on AR. But I say keep doing what YOU are doing. The cream always rises to the top. I realy enjoyed this post BTW. Very well written. Keep it up.

Broker Bryant is very wise.  Just do your own thing.  Keep up the good writing and find your voice.  The search engines will reward you - points don't matter.

Never forget that Universal Law dominates our lives and the lives of people who do not live by any kind of a moral code.

Forget about the points, do what you do and the rest will take careful itself as per the laws of this planet.

What comes around always goes around. The bad always catches up to the bad and the good catches up to the good. That's a good thing :)

Ahhh, the laws of the universe...a great philosophy to live by.  Its funny how life events can leave you sidetracked, but through it all, you come across those who help put you right back on track.  The Active Rain community and culture is still relatively new to me, but it's great to see that there are many, many wise and helpful voices out here (on any number of issues).  Linda, TLW, Bryant...keep those great contributions/blogs/insights and advice coming.

What are clients going to think when they see well thought out posts vs the spamming for points?  They are here and probably to stay.  Be original, out of the box and be YOU!
