The meaning of the Red Door?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Rosemont Financial Inc

Red Door A client of mine just painted his front door red.  When I asked him “why red?” he said that he really did not know but he had seen red doors all of his life and like it.  So my question is, does anyone know the meaning behind a red front door?

I thought that a red door meant "money" in feng shui...

stems from the old testament... passover... in exodus... however... all of the joy/Christ and feng shui... but it does all date back and originate from the bible. :)

I just painted my front door red yesterday and had no idea it had any signifcance at all other than that I just LOVE the way a red door looks!  I decorate with that color anyway, and now I can't wait to see how beautiful it looks at Christmas with the greenery and snow.   I'm going to post on my blog about it as soon as I finish the 2nd and 3rd coats of paint here http://www.thymeinmygarden.com and this is another excellent post on red doors too.

there is a song i like and it goes like this:

"i've got a red red red red door

and a big grey cozy house

a black black black black car

and an r-e-d bi-c-y-c-l-e

but i don't have you,

i don't have you

i dont' have you"

and so i was wondering about red doors cause my boyfriend asked me.  across the street from his house is a church with a red door and i've been wondering about this for sooooo long for no reason at all!  thanks a lot you guys, this is really helpful!

It's from the Bible first and foremost.  It keeps out evil or harm (Passover).   Others   "in the know"  would be of the

same beliefs and therefore would be "welcome" in your sanctuary.  All other reasons stated are made up or came along

much much later.

I too like Jessica Lopez's explanation. I'm a first time home owner. I just moved into my newly constructed custom built home, and my door is deep red cherry oak. Does that count or does it have to be blood red to count? If not it will have to do for the good karma, I waited 7 months for my door to make it here from Europe and I'll be damned if I pull out a can of bright red paint...LOL

No Really

After reading this I've painted my door polka dot. Since then I have very strange people knock on it, even though I have a door bell. No one has asked to stay the night and no slaves have come here for refuge, but a cute Puerto Rican blonde did sleep over since then and has become my fiance. We have now painted the door like a Puerto Rican flag. Good thing I read these posts, thank you.

I just painted my 2 exterior doors red and then the inside of my front door as well.  I LOVE it and I see it as a sign of confidence, peace, welcome and love.  It looks awesome and I will forever have a red door and hope to even have one in my old-folks home room.

When I was in Boston several years ago, I was told that a Red door was a sign that you had an available daughter.  If the door was blue then you did not.

I see there are many different meanings, but I especially like Tami's (#37) reason. I would think you would need to be pretty confident to paint your front door red. If I buy my first home soon (which I hope is very soon) I will paint the front door a deep red. OOO I'm excited now!

Used to ward off evil. All so used are knockers with fierce heads. (lion, dragon, gargoyle.) or crosses. Sometimes there will be a cross or pentagram carved in to the baseboard or trim of a door to do the same thing.

Red door but not for long ...

We were just reprimanded by our HOA for painting our front door red. It must be black, grey, white or burgundy, We've gotten do many compliments on the color from our neighbors.

the brothel had a red LIGHT. that's why they call an area of town the "red light district."

I just painted my red door and I love the idea of it meaning "welcome." Sorry Feng Shui, it faces north, but I hope it still brings in good chi.  My house is blue the trim is white, my front doors are Red. Not just red but RED. The neighbors all seem to like it. I've had great comments about my front doors.

Thank you for all the explanations. I'll take "welcome" ande "good chi" as my meanings.

How can we be of service

I always thought a red door was for welcome, black was for carear and orange means you have paid off your home.
