CRASHBERRY

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Northeast Properties

This Thursday morning, I was just in between a coffee appointment and a hair appointment, going through my typical driving routine: return to car, buckle up, adjust the station, drive out, feel around on the passenger's seat for my phone, wait until I'm driving on a normal, straight road, check missed calls and messages (both office and cell voicemails, text messages and emails), return calls, return messages (at stop lights or if I'm not in traffic), etc. until I get to my destination.

This time, however, I only got to the point of finding my phone, saw that it was vibrating like crazy, wondered who a number was that I didn't recognize, looked up, and YIKES!  The car in front of me had come to a dead stop.  I slammed on my brakes but still ended up hitting him, not damaging his car, but definitely making my car unsuitable for taking out clients, to say the least.  It turned out he had stopped for a crosswalk that I had not seen coming. Luckily, there was no one crossing.

I just wanted to post this on AR as a reminder to be careful out there, because I know I'm not the only real estate agent out there cranking on a blackberry, trying to be as connected and responsive as possible, and I know it's a tough habit to break.  Productivity feels good.  But even when you look down for a second, something can happen, and the guilt of being responsible is simply not worth it.

OUCH! I hope everyone was OK. You are so right, we all need to be careful out there. It surprises me sometimes to see how many people use their driving time as phone time. I must say I am guilty as well, but I try to do it in a safe manner (as much as possible). Sorry about your car  =(

Michelle~  I think most of us are doing that same thing, which is absolutely crazy, isn't it? WHY do we take such risks?  We all know better, I guess we just think it isn't going to happen to us....  Bad habits are hard to break unless you focus on correcting it, it just doesn't happen, does it?

So sorry that happened to you!  My friends refer to it as the "Crackberry" as it is so addictive!

How could we make it through the day without our Blackberry?  I found out it's possible when I forgot mine last week but I certainly didn't feel dressed without it.  BTW, glad you're OK.

I won't answer the phone while I'm driving unless it is a family member.  I keep the phone right beside me so I don't have to go looking for it.  I don't answer other calls because inevitably, they want me to focus on them (the caller) and I have to write down notes - can't do that while driving!  When I'm driving, I'm driving - I prefer not to get into crashes!!!  Anytime I've broken my 'no phone rule' while driving, I've regretted it.

Great reminder Michelle. I have to remind myself to only text at red lights as I had one close call like yours. Glad no one was hurt.
