EDUCATION IN AUSTIN-IT IS IMPORTANT-LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

A list of the top high schools in the country was recently released by Newsweek Magazine. The list showing the top 5% of high schools was compiled by Jay Mathews, a reporter for The Washington Post and contributing editor for Newsweek

Students

Austin placed a total of 17 area schools on the list. Thirteen of these are in the immediate Austin area. Seven of which are in the Austin ISD; LBJ (97), Anderson (393), McCallum (646), Bowie (996), Austin High (1006), Akins (1086) and
Crockett (1149). Two other Austin schools made the list,
Westlake (52), the highest rated school in the area, and
Lake Travis High (603). Joining them on the list are three schools in the Round Rock ISD: Westwood (78), McNeil (680), and 
Round Rock High (827).The other member is Cedar Park High(736).

High schools in the surrounding area making the list are New Braunfels (375), Dripping Springs (862),
San Marcos High (1113) and Fredericksburg (1315).

The state of Texas, with a total of 109, is fourth highest, behind California (224), New York (170) and Florida (124). Rounding out the top ten are Virginia (90), Maryland (77), Georgia (51), Illinois (46), New Jersey (46) and Washington (45).

Austin compares extremely well to the other major cities in Texas.Dallas/Fort Worth totals 25, seven       
in Dallas, three in Fort worth and fifteen in the rest of the Metroplex.Houston has 21, eleven in Houston   and ten in the surrounding areas. San Antonio comes in with 17, twelve in San Antonio and five just outside of San Antonio.

I believe that these are impressive numbers for Texas and for Austin specifically. Knowing that there are many great high schools from which to choose and that your child will get a quality edecation, preparing them for college, adds to the reasons that make Austin a great place to live and raise a family.
