Is your lawn safe for your pets and children?

We all have seen the small signs on the lawn: it shows pets with a bar over them with the words Warning!. As I commend the owners and the lawn care services to warn owners of pets.Lately I have been looking for pet friendly organic lawn fertilizers and care.  Lawn herbesides are the number one killer of pets in the USA and it makes me sad and mad to know that some owners in Fort Myers Beach do not try at least  to respect human life. Most do care.

There are a few good products such as http://www.ecochem.com/t_sitemap.html ECOCHEM.   "EcoChem Natural Organic products lawn care products are highly efficient, have no adverse affect on the environment and are NOT harmful to animals, plants, humans, aquatic life, honeybees, earthworms, beneficial insects and birds" Continue

I have to agree that weeding in the heat of the summer or at any time of the year must be one of the most gruesome activity. It stinks. They also have a product with take care of weeds and patches by the same company.

Dogs use their tongues as an instrument and will lick everything in sight including their paws.As a result of using lawn herbicide chemical increases cancer, and increases bladder cancer and is one of the major reason for lymphoma in pets.Children also should keep away from such chemicals.Proven side effects have been studied Both Environmental Protection Agency and the National Academy of Sciences have voiced their concern.

And no I do not work for EcoChem nor am I paid by them. They also have other organic pet friendly products such as soil conditioner, bio fertilizer and pond cleaner and many more     I will in the near future, after more research, putting together a motion to the town of Fort Myers Beach which I hope will impose lower percentages of phenoxy herbicides, warning signs on treated lawn and the availability of organic pet friendly lawn products.

Be a friend to man's best friends.Cats, dogs, birds.all of them. The intention of this blog is not to chastise owners but to make some of them aware of alternative ways to treat your lawn. After all, after it rains, and specially in low lands ( barrier islands for example)and along lakes, canals, rivers, these chemicals will flow into these waters and destroy the natural cycle of our water ways and its life. Not to mention our water tables. We have to change our ways. It takes a few to start on the street where you live.

Some good advise, however, I think if you keep the pets off the lawn for 24 hours after they are applied the pesticides are mostly gone and not harefull on the surface. But that migth not always be the case I suppose so good advise.

thanks

I hate weeding, but I take pride in my lawn, avoiding pesticides and herbicides.  Thanks for pointing out ecochem ... I'm always interested in eco-friendly lawn care products.  That said, I'd like to get some of those pesticide warning signs just to keep neighbourhood kids off my lawn...

Hi Lloyd,

Wow, great and interesting post.  We often forget we must be good stewards of the land and we must not forget how chemicals affect our pets and our children.

I am so glad to read this and use the links to the sites you speak about.  I have been looking around and I have just been pulling and mowing weeds because I can't figure out what to do.

I re-blogging this on my site, as I feel it is so important for people to read and consider.  Please continue to keep us informed.  This is terrific information.

Thank you so much,

Kelly Parks
