Today is the
big Quinceañera that my daughter Nicole has waited all summer
to be a part of. We have never gone to one before so it is
exciting for the whole family (well maybe not my husband who is going
because he feels he should and not at all for my son who declined the
invite but the girls are excited and so am I) A quinsinera is
the 15th birthday party given in honor of a special right of passage in
a girl's life. This girl's heritage is Mexican and they are
doing a party of epic proportions. I have already warned both
Nicole and Victoria that their Sweet 16 parties will be much smaller
and consist of a rented hall, simple food, and some music.
This party has a
court of friends of the birthday girl. There are 8 boys and 7
girls who will be in the court. They are all wearing formal
wear. The party will start for them when they are picked up
in a stretch Hummer limo and whisked to the church for a Mass.
They will then be going for photos at a park. Next
stop is a "mocktail" hour at a very nice banquet hall followed by
dinner and dancing for over 100 people.
The kids have
worked hard on a formal dance that they will perform at the start of
the dinner. I still can't believe the birthday girl managed
to convince 8 teenage boys to come for 7 waltz lessons and to perform
it in front of all these people. They looked great though at
rehearsal the other day. Many of the girls and all of the
boys had never had any dance training before so this was a big deal.
This party is
the event of the summer and I was having difficulty understanding the
expense and scope of it all. I really did not understand it
before but this is what fathers and mothers do for their daughters in
Mexico if they can afford it. It is a celebration of the
child turning into a young woman. I am sure it will be
beautiful.
I know that it
will be a special memory for my daughter and she will have a blast.
I for one am looking forward to dancing the night away.
Have a great
Friday everyone. I won't be commenting much more today.
Too much to do.
