Are you excited to sell my house ?

Are you excited ?

We had a listing appointment on Monday where everything was going great.  I had great rapport with the potential sellers, a fantastic Q&A session answering all the questions regarding pricing, strategy, marketing, advertising, our experience and so forth.  I was on fire ! Then a final question was asked by the husband:

Are you excited to sell my house ?

I almost froze on the question and thought "Oh my God - am I excited ?  Am I not excited ?"  I have not froze on a question on a listing appointment in years !!  But I took a moment and smiled.  I remembered that this is what it is all about.  Helping people accomplish their goals, being part of their lives, and really being excited and feeling honor and pride that you are the one that they are choosing to help them with one of the most important decisions in their lives !  This process will net them the most amount of proceeds and help them move foward in their lives and you are a part of it !

I found myself thinking for a moment, wow... I have been caught up in the details, some of the drainers and being drained in the tough real estate market.  Sometimes I worry about all the things that could go wrong or look at the fact of why did we not get a certain listing... Instead of focusing on all the positive things which they are numerous.  It really is all about perspective and gratitude.

I answered his question, "Yes I am pumped up to sell your property ! "  That is what we do !!!

We just listed the property last night and we look foward to selling it for them.  It makes me happy to be able to see the big picture and not get totally lost in all the clouds and confusion of the tough real estate market.  Remember when you first started and got your first listing ?  Or your second ?  Or closed your first deal ?  Or had your first settlement ?  Or accomplished that first milestone ?

It is important to maintain that energy and excitement - that attidue of excellence and vibrancy.  It shows and it is important not only to success, but to ones inner soul as well.

Are you excited to sell your client's house today ?

Vickie - your point is awesome.  The people that we meet and get a chance to meet is invaluable and priceless !  That is what it is all about.  And when we get paid for that, being part of those special moments, well that simply is quite awesome.  Thanks for sharing that !

Erik - I agree.  If one just answers questions with bs, I think people know that and sense that.  It is great to really believe in something because it comes out when you communicate and express yourself.  It really makes "sales" easy pe se.

Patricia - Attitude is everything !!  Is good to get pumped up !

Sharon - You bet - it is a good reminder : )  And yes, our area is definitely going through a revitalization per se, a lot of new construction and new development and the like.  That is exciting too !

Paul - good to see you !  It is important to be excited about what we do and our careers !

Carole -  Thanks !  Is great to have a new listing.  Is good perspective to focus on the positive instead of the negative.  When we got home from that appointment with the signed paperwork, my wife said "We are doing something right".   And yes, we are !!  It is a good reminder to be aware of that !

Great post! I coach agents to ask THEMSELVES that question before they take a listing - that is - would they proudy show their buyers this home? IF the answer is no, it may not be a listing the agent wants. If you aren't excited about your own listing, no one else will be either. And certainly not all listings are worth being excited about!

Cristal - thanks for your thoughts !  It was a great reminder for me not to be a machine per se but to be human and really remmeber what it is all about... and yes, to be excited ! And pumped up !  Will post that listing to Localism today !!!

Jennifer - That is a great point.  One of the benefits that Stephanie and I have had this past year is really having great listings to sell - great products to feel excited about and proudly show buyers and talk to people on the phone about - whether it be buyers or buyers agents - to be well informed to go over all the benefits !!!  Love the way you think !

At that moment I may ask the seller..."Where the hell did that question come from?"  My answer may be more like... "In normal times I would be extremely enthusiastic, but times have changed!  We are now in some changing times and what will be required is a team effort.  It will not be just my enthusiasm that sells the home, it will be yours also.  It will be your duty as the seller to keep the appearance of the home both inside an outside up.  Do not get discouraged if we do not receive a lot of traffic...or offers!"

Shannon - Thanks !  You are right - the combination of a great product and working with good people who are motivated and do not have unrealistic expectations makes the process that much more smooth and enjoyable per se.  And yes, it is good to be excited !

Jim - Great point - I agree with you.  It is of great importance for the seller to maintain the appearance - clean and tidy - and to not get disappointed if things take a little longer than in the past.  Still, I like the idea of us as agents being happy and excited in what we do as I think those qualities make us better people as well as better agents, salespeople and negotiators.  At the end of the day, excitment will not sell a house, but it can help and make the process fun at the same time !

Great reminder that our enthusiasm or lack thereof carries over into everything we do. If we are excited about selling a home then we do the marketing even though we know it's a challenging market and guess what? We sell the house! Jim's point is well made - the Seller has to be excited about selling the house too and cooperate with condition and price and terms.

Christopher, as a former seller with a Realtor, I can understand that question. Some Realtors truly ARE NOT excited to sell your house. Steer clear of them.

Sharon - yes if we are thinking negative, it is going to show in how we communicate and even in our body language.  If we are excited, that energy will come out in different manifestations.

Gary - I know - I try to picture some of our competitors on a certain listing appt and it is hard to envision.   That positive aura and karma is picked up... and even more so if it is negative !

Randy - me either.  It is always interesting to different types of questions that we get - I thought I had heard them all, until this one : )  And not for nothing, it may be one of the best questions to ask !!!

Good post! I try to remember how it feels to be a Seller or a Buyer myself. More importantly to convey the sense of excitement I always feel with a new Buyer or Seller client. I never had anyone ask that question though.

Christopher and Stephanie :

Did you ever see one of those movies like die hard, when Bruce Willis is all beaten up. He just proved he made the greatest effort and can not look fresh and bright eyed. No way, but we expect him to be the same cop before the great test of his endurance and strength. So that's you, you can't let the market show on your collar. You got get up in the morning and forget everthing, but what the next deal needs from you. Wash your face with cold water, straighten your tie and look sharp.

Thats what the public wants.

Best always,

Richard    (I wish I had a smile face for here)

Judy - it is a good reminder... especially for those clients that are selling or buying their first property !

Richard - you are the man !  Love the way you think and attitude.  I like it... we are tough realtors and we work our butts off !

Deborah - Thanks !  I agree it was a tough, good and sharp condition !  I respected and still do (wrote a post about it) admire the question... my answer is also my belief as I practice that daily sooo I think that shows as well.

C and S, you are so right about needing to find the excitement. It's kinda like a stale marriage. You stay and keep doing your job but if you lose the excitement it's more like work. We should all open our hearts to the needs of our clients. It makes it much easier to remember the joy! Thank you.

Yes, we are honored and blessed to be invited into people's homes and lives and given their trust.  It is a privelege to do what we do.  And they are lucky to have us too.  It is a mutual respect and trust that gets the job done with a raving fan at the end and hopefully lots of referrals.  Good luck with that one.

Deb - Yes, totally agree.  Life is short so it is important to maintain and keep that excitement, vigor and vitality in all aspects of our lives - from selling houses, to our personal goals, to marriages and relationships and so forth !  Great point !

Terrylynn - Absolutely !  I think agents forget that yes, it is an honor to be chosen and hired to help a person with one of the most important times of their lives.
