Is it really New and Improved? $1 coin releases

By

Ok.. I don't like these $1 coins, maybe its just me, but they are not distinctive enough from a quarter in the dark, they are heavy in numbers and how many coin operated machines accept them?  Aside from all that I fear we are stuck with them.

Locally, here in Austin Texas I am hearing radio commercials often about how we as Americans should do our part to make these coins more popular, to use them, the pitch is.. These coins will last longer than paper dollars and save our economy many gazillions of dollars... and they are more environmentally friendly... cause we dont have to recyle them as often.

I'm all for environmentally friendly things, but we live in a paper society... not as much as 1970's but still we have and use our share of paper, especially us Realtors!  Did you ever count all the papers that it takes to complete a contract?  From first offer to HUD1 statement? All the parties get copies, my broker gets a copy, the other agent gets a copy and their broker and then I get to keep a copy.  WHOA!!  thats probably at least 100 pages.   So with all that considered maybe I should get a lighter lipstick and start using those coins.

If you have a great interest here is the link that defines the release date of the $1 coins.http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/?action=schedule

If you would like to purchase a home in my area, Austin Texas, even if you wish to use a wheelbarrow full of $1 coins, call me.   I can help you find the perfect home here.  Gail Tassey, 512-217-9482 gailnttexas@gmail.com

I think so many people use debit cards rather than cash, that perhaps this will become less of an issue over time.

I bought some, keeping them uncirculated and in the packaging...that is how they remain valuable, so I'm told.

Gail, I agree with you. I think that $1 coins in the past have failed because they are too similar to a quarter. It seems to me that if we could overcome that one thing then the coins might be more popular. Of course with the infalation the way it is, one dollar by itself doesn't buy much anyway. Maybe they should have started with a $5 coin!

Hi Gale,  Did you noticed that they remove the words { in god we trust } from the coin. All the other coins have it. Like Christine said; debit cards are more popular than cash.~ Newbie Roy

My Mom has been collecting these for my children.  Like Karen's these are still in their packaging; although she even bought a Picture frame that is made for them.  Who knows maybe my children will be rich someday from these valuable coins (lol).

Hi Gail... How many times do you think the government going to try a $1 coin deal before they realize that the public is not going to embrace it?

I can agree with all of ya'll..  I too use my debit card almost all the time, except the toll roads don't take them here in Austin.  :(    ... I think the commercials are the gov'ts way of trying to make us like them, the coins I mean.  :)   I wonder if they don't know about the old proverb, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink?  but that is another story of mine for another time. ;)

I think we are all so used to the dollar bill that a coin never sticks... I would love to see a debit card/thumb print for everything and eliminate money...

Hi Gail,  Personally I don't like the $1 coins. I'm with you, they look too much like quarters. I'm not ready for a paperless society either.

I think they are too similar to quarters and a bad idea. The government did this back when I was a kid. There were real silver dollar coins (you know made with real sterling silver) but they cost to much to make and if you have one now its worth way more than a dollar. Numismatic collectors will give you about $20 for one of those coins.

I was in the vending business before my life in real estate.  The only way the dollar coin will work (any dollar coin) is they need to make and distribute lots of them AND totally eliminate the paper dollar.  Without the paper dollar gone, then dollar coin is just a collectors item.

Hey Ricki.. thanks for commenting.. always appreciated you know. :)

Betina, I agree totally, bad idea. but the govt keeps trying to push them on us... so its just a matter of time before it will be permanent I fear.

David... paper dollars are on the short list I would guess.  I recently heard that Austin is being used with a couple of other  cities as a test case for the use of these dollar coins.  But, I don't think anyone likes them.
