I'm At An Open House Without My Blackberry (a.k.a. Crackberry)!

Real Estate Agent with RLAH Real Estate AB95346

I wrote this off and on during an Open earlier today!  I sort of got interrupted before I could post it!

If I thought I was addicted to Active Rain, that's nothing compared to my bond with my Blackberry!

I arrived at my Open House about 10 minutes early, went through the place turning on lights, and noticed that in the back sunroom, there were a bunch of spider webs and leaves in the small sunroom at the back of the house.  No problem, I thought, I'll just phone favorite colleague and blog buddy, Cati Bannier.  She lives a few blocks from here and can drop by with a broom and dustpan.

But Wait!  I'd forgotten my second-best friend and constant companion, that little navy blue and black miraculous piece of technology!  (Just for the record, Willie the hyperactive Labradoodle puppy comes in first)

Holy yikes!  Three hours of being unhooked and out of touch, at least by phone.  And I didn't have time to run home to get it.

I am into hour two of my Open and am noticing physical symptoms.

  • A rapid heart beat
  • An uneasiness in my stomach
  • Excessive perspiration, although the central air conditioning is performing beautifully

I do have my little laptop, so at least I can check email and blog between buyers and agents coming through.

OK, Pat!  Take a deep breath!  A car just pulled up and people are getting out.

It's Showtime!

Get over it!

It's amazing how we ever lived without all of these modern conveniences! Every once in a while it's nice to unplug and fake a battery meltdown :-)

I wrote a blog post during my open house today also.  I had my Palm phone so my heart rate stayed normal.  I know exactly how you felt.  My cell phone is an appendage.

Are we connected???  You bet we are.  In many ways, it's our security blanket.

I rarely use my cell phone because they don't let me out much any more and I'm virtually chained to my computer desk.  However, from time to time, I have to go to the P.O. Box to collect money and to the bank to deposit the checks.

From time to time, about 2 times a year, I get out without my cell phone.  I am like a cat on a hot tin roof until I can either go back home to collect my cell phone or complete my chores and get back home where I'm safely connected, to something.  I don't even use my cell phone when I'm out but, suppose I have a flat tire?  Or, suppose I need to check messages??

You just can't disconnect yourself from your base for too long.

Unless, of course, it's a fishing journey.

It wasn't that long ago that we didn't even have cell phones! How quickly we become dependent and feel lost without them!

I have had the same feeling and it is almost distracting to everything else that is going on we get so used to it. We may need to have an intervention.

Pat- Yikes, No phone (Blackberry or other) is like walking out the door without your panties pants on. The nakedness of it all is unnerving for sure. Glad you made it through.

I've been looking at the blackberry, thinking about taking the plunge. Not so sure it would be a good thing - I am addicted to my laptop and regular cell phone as it is. With a blackberry? Oh man!

Pat - I'm getting use to my new gadget but can only take the learning curve in small doses. It did come in handy on vacation - sure beats lugging a laptop and walking a mile through a resort to use a business center, when all I really ever needed was to check voice mails and email once a day. I left most new developments and small details to my broker to handle but needed to be available when clarification was needed.

How could you go without your phone!  I don't have a laptop but we went on vacation last year and the hotel didn't have internet connection at all!!  Talk about addiction!!  I was frantic.  I needed to check my email!!  Guess I need to start doing email on my Treo but so far didn't feel the need.
