Home Staging Survey Results and commentary

By
Home Stager with Home Staging by Amie

Survey Participants

  • 81% Realtors
  • 19 % home builders

1. Have you ever used the services of a home stager:

  • 80 % said no
  • 20 % said yes

This did not come as a surprise to me. I know home staging is relatively new to the real estate industry. As is true with any new product or service, people need to be educated in its benefits and results. Realtors and home builders are inundated with sales and promotional material from all types of service providers, so it is hard to know who can be trusted and who really is providing a beneficial service.

2. For those who answered "no" they have never used the services of a home stager:

  • 56% said they would consider it
  • 38% said they were undecided and
  • 6% said they would not consider using the services of a home stager - no explanations were given.

I see this as enlightening. The majority of participates indicated they would consider using the services of a home stager with a lesser percentage indicating they were undecided. The smallest percentage of participants indicate they would not consider using the services of a home stager.

3. Home Staging -- an Effective Marketing Tool:

  • 83% said yes
  • 17% said they are undecided
  • None of the respondents said false

I see this as surprising. The large majority of survey participants see home staging as an effective marketing tool, yet only 20% have ever used a home stager. Even though home staging is a relatively new service, I see Realtors, as a group, as very innovative and savvy when it comes to marketing their services and listings.

4. Home Staging as part of a marketing plan:

  • 36% Always
  • 30% Sometimes
  • 24% Never
  • 10% Seldom

Even though 83% of participants see home staging as an effective marketing tool, only 36% of participants always use home staging as part of their marketing plan. 30 percent use home staging as part of their marketing plan sometimes; 10% seldom and 24% never.

5. Home staging is only necessary at certain times relative to the market:

  • 59% False
  • 24% True
  • 17% Undecided

This is good news indeed.

6. Home Staging is Unnecessary:

  • 82% False
  • 15% Undecided
  • 3% True

The overwhelming majority of participants agree that home staging is necessary.  This is good news.  It has taken hard work and a stick to it approach to advance the home staging industry with win/win results for all.

7. With regard to home staging being expensive

  • 44% True
  • 28% False
  • 28% Undecided

It will take further work to get home sellers and Realtors to understand home staging is not about spending money but about making money.  Home Staging is about creative low cost solutions and not about how much money can be spent.

Amie,

Very enlightening post.  Where did you do the survey?  This is great information for all of us in the home staging industry and shows we have a lot of work to do to educate REA, Builders and the public.  That's one of the reasons RESA is such a great association.  It is making huge inroads in helping professional stagers get the word out there.

Thanks for all your hard work.  May we share your survey results?

Gail -- The survey was done in Southern Louisiana (which is where Home Staging by Amie is based) covering areas such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  I thought the survey was enlightening and provided some valuable information.  You certainly may feel free to share my survey results; however, I would think the responses are specific to this area.

Great initiative Amie!  How many survey respondents participated, and what was your methodology? Did you do phone interviews, on online survey, ???

Susan -- the survey was done through my monthly newsletter.  The survey participants were my monthly newsletter recipients.  The questions were developed over time and were based on information I wanted to obtain.

Like Susan, I would like to know how many replies you received for this survey.  The results are interesting indeed.

There were a total of 76 participants in the survey -- which by the way does not really make a difference.  The percentages for each answer would have been calculated the same way regardless of how many participants there were.

I took Statistics in college--I know how sampling and percentages work.

I'm much more inclined to be interested in, and take seriously, a survey of 76 people than one of say, 10 or 12.

Surely anyone reading this will be interested to know how many Realtors and builders you actually got to submit replies.

I am curious as to the number of realtors and builders.

Can you break that down?

Thanks for sharing your survey results.  To make it easier for readers to see the data without having to read down through all the comments -- just as a suggestion, you might consider adding the data in your post above, with an introduction paragraph so that readers can see who responded, the geographical area, number of each category responding, etc.  Interesting info!

Amie,

Thanks so much for sharing all this information.  I think from previous posts your results show pretty much the same but it is great that you would take the time to share it with us and answer all our questions and be so willing to let us share your results with others.

Amie,

Thanks so much! Though your results are area driven, they seem to reflect my experience here in Michigan. And, to reinforce the 20% rule--80% of your business will come from 20% of your target. now, it's just finding that open minded 20%...

Great survey and one that would probably be a good thing to do in ALL areas across the country. Do you care to share the methodology of your survey in more detail for those of us in other parts of the country?  Thanks for sharing.
