Brookings, Oregon ~ Sailing the Serendipity

We finally sailed the Serendipity!!

Serendipity

Yesterday we took her out for the very first time and how exciting it was. But it was also a bit scary. We had never sailed before and I was nervous. I called my mother before we left the house to say good-bye and that I loved her. I also told her if she didn't hear back from me by dark to call the coast guard.

But I had no reason to be afraid. Alan had taken sailing classes with the Brookings Yacht Club and he knew what he was doing....I think! It was a perfect day for a maiden voyage. Clear skies, light breeze, and hardly any swells. I probably didn't even need to take that Dramamine! The wine, cheese and crackers were a nice touch as well!

We saw jelly fish, water birds, huge pelicans and the view from the ocean towards Brookings was a perspective I enjoyed immensely. We also did a little fishing and caught some nice bottom fish!

I think I am hooked, but I don't believe I want to try to live aboard Serendipity. She is just a tad too small. Even though my husband has made numerous comments about living on a sailboat...he better get a larger one if he wants me to live on board!!

Lori...it looks like you guys had a great day out on Serendipity.  Now, when hubby says you need a bigger boat if you're going to live aboard... the correct response is... yes, dear. :) haha Let me know when you're ready and we'll plan a circumnavigation.  I'm dying to go.

Very cool! My husband lived on a 50 ft sailboat when I met him =)  Now about these bottom fish. Are they edible? I assume their name tells their nature... they stay at the bottom? For most fish or crabs, that usually means they taste kinda sandy. So how do bottom fish taste? Or are they even edible?

Jesse- I will remember my reply.....yes, dear! And about a circumnavigation, my hubby says yesterday. Lets go!

Lisa- So hubby couldn't talk you into living aboard? Do tell!

And the bottom fish are very tasty. I don't think they taste sandy, but you know everyone's tatses are different. The bottom fish we caught this day were Blacks and very large. We also catch ling cod, greenlings and others. My oldest son has been doing a little bit of commerical live fishing. The boat he fishes has a live well and the fish are kept alive clear until the buyer arrives. He is really doing it for a side income but enjoys it very much. Needless to say we eat a lot of fish.....
