I'm not Bryant Tutas

Real Estate Attorney with Bay Vista Realty BK671311

I was kidding around the other day......Go figure!  I made the comment that my next blog would be entitled as it is.  And Awaaaaayyyy WE GO!

I'm not Bryant Tutas.  For instance...his blogs actually get comments.  He is the master of the Blog and so many of us enjoy reading his stuff that we think....man that guy is good.

But then who really is a Bryant Tutas.  I mean, Not Bryant Tutas, not originally.  Sure his parents probably named him Bryant and his last name is Tutas.  But then there is that whole Shakespeare thing about roses and names.

If Bryant Tutas owned a car dealership in Nebraska, would we know who he is?  Probably not. If he painted houses in Rio Linda would we know. Nope.  But Bryant Tutas has become a name that we all know in the area and on Active rain because of one reason and one reason only.  That reason is that Bryant chose a sales career for his career, and in sales you must be good at something that many of us shy away from.  Self Promotion

Now before angrily you click the comment button, hear me out and hang on to see if I can get some wisdom out of this.

Bryant has taken what we are all supposed to do and be to a higher planeHe has made his name what it is.  He is a self starting individual and has succeeded greatly where so many have failed.

I once interviewed a guy who said to me, I don't like to talk about myself.  Uh.....hello there Skippy, this is an interview!

SO why am I no Bryant Tutas?  Because I am Gary De Pury! and You are (Insert your name here)!  For everything that you think you can't do, I can name three things that I can't.  For every thing that I excel at, you can best me on something else.

Why did I pick on Bryant Tutas, he was available and I like typing his name.  (The letters are closer together than Wayne Gretzky) but the person doesn't matter.  The idea is try to be something that you're not and you will always be where you don't belong.  Excel at being who you are and you will get where you are supposed to be.

So many people give in when they think that they can't catch someone (Who they believe to be) better than they are.    They submit to early in the game when they see someone get listing after listing and they only close 50%.  They give up when they don't get the referrals that they DON'T ask for. WHY?????

So your homework tonight is find someone that you think has an edge on you and figure out three things.

1) Do they really have an edge or am I just making myself believe they do.

2) Do I have an edge on them?

3) How can I sharpen that edge to make myself better at being ME!

Once you have figured those things out... then sit back and contemplate all of the opportunities that you may have lost because you thought that someone better was going to do it before you.  All of the listings that you didn't go after, all of the FSBO's you have driven by and then finally seen another sign up, all of the referrals that you didn't ask for...and so on.

Then CHANGE it.  My Grandfather taught me...."Don't mimic success, BE Success"!   But then he told me to get off his yard! ? :)

Since I don't have my grandfathers wisdom I say "Be the broom and not the dirt.  Do the moving, don't be moved and get swept away."

Well, good night folks and great talking to you.

I am glad you see it as a compliment.  I was worried that it may been misconstrued.  But it is also a call to action to be more than you are.  For instance, your show.  What a great way to do that.  I have done allot of Radio and it is a great way to get your ideas out.  I will try to listen, But I will be on the road, church, and at a rental property later.

Oooohhh, I never had a gold star before.....

Ummmm...Upsidedown cake.    Ouch... who baked that file in there.

Ok Gary, I can relax now. When you sent me the e-mail giving me a headsup on the title of your Blog I was a little nervous. I knew it wouldn't be negative but I wasn't sure what you were going to write about. Now that I've read it, you make some very good points.

Our own success should never be gauged by what other people may or may not be doing. Especially since what we think they may be doing is probably far from the truth. We can only see the facade. Everyone needs to find their niche in life and concentrate on what they are good at. Compete with yourself and at least you will always finish in a tie!

Thanks Gary. Good post.

Yes Bryant Tutas does have a catchy name, but the man behind the blogs (and the lovely wife behind him) have given us all something to strive for. I got a gold star once, but then I have only done about 4 blogs. Bryant has done a lot, and they are not just comment blogs, but well thought out.

But we all need to strive for our own personal best. Not feeling that we want to be Bryant!, or someone else. Each of us is unique and we need to portray that uniqueness and sell it!

Real Estate, to me is the ultimate selling position. If you can sell houses, where people live their lives, then you can sell anything. But you need to sell yourself first.

I wanto be like Mike!  Wait, that was when I was younger many many years ago, now I want to be like Bryant!  Bryant is a very good man and he likes me.  It means a lot to be liked by Bryant.

So he has a very catchy and nice name.  How about my name?  Nima Rezvan.  The first URL I had was www.NimaRezvan.com and that is all over my marketing materials: ie: pens, notepads, calendars, emails, cards, etc.  About a couple of months ago I picked a new URL: www.MyNima.com , I thought it was a better fit for what I was trying to do: SELF PROMOTION.

Just sharing a business decision with you all.  Super glad to be a part of the A/R community.

"To thine own self be true" and the old is new again.  It's great to learn things from others, and emulate certain things they do, but really, as Gary's blog implies, it's all about your own uniqueness.  Some people try to be like others, and some cities try to be like others - but cloning people doesn't exist - yet. Be yourself. That's way you'll be #1 You, instead of #2 someone else.

What a wonderful post!  I had been thinking recently about all the incredible talent showcased everyday here at Active Rain, and I have to say I have been feeling sort of old and out of it... even if I am only just a couple of years ahead of said Broker Bryant.   This post is a great reminder to take a look at yourself, give yourself credit for all you do and achieve, and to not compare yourself to anyone.  Negative energy is NOT allowed!
