Tips for New and Not so New Agents

By
Real Estate Agent with ERA Henley Real Estate

1. Since the average term of homeownership can be somewhere between 5 to 8 years, realize that everyday is a marketing day and the easiest people to reach (and those most inclined to listen to your message) are thoseyou already know.Go through your personal address book. Call, mail, or e-mail everyone in your personal address book to let them know that you are now in the real estate business and that you would love to hear their advice and of course, if they know anyone who is interested in buying or selling, that you would appreciate if they mention your name. Don't be shy about this. Don't feel like you can't "impose" on your friends. If your friends won't help you, who will? Ask if it is ok for you to give them an update on your progress from time to time.Continue to contact them from 4 to 6 times a year. Do not assume that they will remember you are in real estate.

2. Make it you goal to add New People to your list of people you know weekly. Have a goal each week of the number of you want to at to your data base.

3. What strengths and weakness do you bring into the real estate business? Find activities that match your strengths and focus on those activities.

4.Develop a Business Plan which will include the number of contacts you need to make on a weekly basis to get the number of listings you need to make your income goal (Your broker should be able to help you develop this plan).

5. Now develop a Weekly Activity Plan and stick with it.  You must do any activity consistently over a long period of time. Nothing works done inconsistently and over a short period of time.

  6. Get someone to make you accountable for sticking with your plan.

The average must vary from region to region.  The figure I hear used in the Seattle area is two to five years.
