Do you know your specialty!

Services for Real Estate Pros with Brick Road Visuals: marketing, virtual tours, photography

Here at Brick Road Visuals, we like to say we're "doing what we do best, so you can do what you do best." We say this because we understand that no one person can specialize in everything - you've heard the phrase "Jack of all trades, Master of none". Do you want to be a Real Estate jack, or a Real Estate Master? Do you want to be a Mortgage jack, or a Mortgage Master, Appraisal jack or Appraisal Master... you get the idea.

I've received Entrepreneur magazine for several years. It seems to be a repeating theme as I've read interviews that most accomplished entrepreneurs understand their success depends on getting someone more qualified than themselves to handle the task. You see, a genius CEO of a top performing company would not be successful without the expert web designers, accountants, sales people, marketers, researchers, and so on they put in place - and they know it! They know their company would surely crumble if it were up to them to head up all those departments.

Whether it's legal professionals, accounting professionals, decorating/design professionals, photography professionals, marketing professionals, etc - we need to get experts on our teams to ensure our success, to ensure that we are a (whatever we do) Master.

I encounter this principle everyday in both the way I serve my clients, and in the way I build my team.

1) I seek out experts to do the tasks that I can't do excellently. If I get a "B", someone else does the job. I set out from the get-go to provide the highest in quality.

2) By accomplishing #1, I make my business an expert resource for my clients. We handle our specialty, so that our clients are free to handle their specialties.

This is how the concept applies to my business. We provide marketing to Realtors, primarily Full Service 360° virtual tours. Our team of photographers, voice talent, software providers, marketers, and researchers are all experts in their fields. We spend our days learning, researching, and expanding. We do this because, first of all, most Realtors are not experts in the tasks we perform. And secondly, if they were to become experts in our fields it would take their attention and time away from their main specialty - listing and selling houses, knowing the applicable rules, laws, and customs, being in the right place and knowing the right people - the list goes on, right. So our effect is 2-fold, our clients are more successful because their marketing is expertly handled by us, and also because they have more time to concentrate on the tasks which they are Masters of.

How can you apply this to your business? Is your team made of experts? If you can't do it excellently do you get someone who can?

This makes so much sense.  So, why is it so hard for so many of us to apply it?

Excellent post and a tried and tested formula throughout the ages. There are still some very busy executives who struggle with this because they feel they will lose control. You have seen them as they run around like headless chickens, trying to be everything to everybody. You bring a very valid and noteworthy point to the table, well done!

You mention the use of voice talent in your media so... call me!

Hi guys,  thanks for stopping by.   I never really thought about it being a "control" issue, but that makes tons of sense.

This is something I have been having to battle within myself- the idea that, if I don't do it myself, it won't be "right." However, there just isn't the time or energy to keep doing it all by myself...

So, my website is now being built by someone with more technical experience, day-to-day office tasks are now being handled by my assistant, and I just put an agent to work with more knowledge of farms/land in the area than I have.

I am very good at creative marketing and at handling the REO properties, so I will continue to work that end of things on my own (but always with an ear open to suggestions, because I certainly don't have ALL the good ideas or knowledge needed). I will be bringing a few more sales "masters"  to work soon, and training a few new agents.

All-in-all, it is a big relief to finally realize that it's okay to let others handle things for me, and that they can actually do much of it better. I intend to surround myself with intelligent, talented people and hope that we can all keep each other motivated to do the best at what we are good at!

Great Post!

I have built successful companies in the past by doing just what you are talking about here. Business leaders who try to wear too many hats end up looking pretty silly and wondering why they are not successful. Wear one hat and find others to wear the ones that don't fit you.

Stick with what you know and build a knowledgable team around you!
