Shouldn't Realtors give back to their communities?

By
Real Estate Agent with Prominent Properties Sotheby's International Realty

How many of our Realtors actually give back to their communities? Some of us enjoy reaping the benefits of placing families in areas that we are not commited to helping. We could volunteer our time or money to organizations in need and change the negative outlook that some people have about Realtors.

Through casual conversations with the general public, I have found that they would conduct even more business with Realtors that do something nice for the communities in which they service.Sometimes we are perceived as greedy and deceiving, thanks to the unworthy Realtors that have done unhonest things. Purchasing uniforms for the local softball team or conducting a clothing drive for the homeless or even creating a community garden where children could plant flowers etc. So why is it that we are not as active as we could be? This does not apply to Realtors that are active and go above and beyond community service. I commend you for your efforts and am glad to see that people still care.

Help revitalize our professional designations and gain a new respect from our community. I know this is a great commitment to ask, but once you begin your involvment you will want to do more. No matter how different the community- there is something we could share to improve it.

Just so you know: I am a community service member for the Eastern Bergen County Board of Realtors

Donate a portion of my sales commission from every sale to the Childrens Miralcle Network

Coordinate  monthly food drives for the Center For Food Action

Conduct clothing and coat drives throughout the year for the needy

Please post any stories you may have about this topic.

We give $30 per closing to Habitat for Humanity and have worked on a couple of Habitat builds as well.  We also send money to my wife's relatives in Romania, they really need all the help they can get.

Our company as a whole does fundraising for MDA.

Our local office has an annual food drive for our local food bank - we each adopt however many blocks/houses we want (I did 200 last year) and drop off bags with a letter indicating what it's for and then go back on a specified day and pick up the bags that they've been asked to leave by the mailbox or the drive or wherever's convenient and visible.  We get great response to it, and, yes, it does show that we're all members of the same community, real estate agents or not.

In addition, other agents in our office have our own private charities or causes that we contribute to and volunteer for.  Not just for our profession, but for our community.

GREAT!!!

I am happy to hear that there are Realtors that give back to a cause. I am sure it is deeply appreciated.

Keep up the great work and Good Luck!

I am still newer to my area. I think I am going to donate a portion of my commission to local schools. The schools in this area seem like they need the most help.

Give back to the community. That was one of my "G's" in my blog "Geez, where's my success?"That is key... you help others and get the exposure but most of all. you feel good! By the way... support child abuse protection and adoption efforts in your community.

Superb job! All Realtors should be interested in their community and show it by supporting it!
